He loves him even though he has a mental disbility ,but at other times George is very mean to Lennie. However, when George is mean to Lennie he ends his tirade with "No--look I was jus' foolin' Lennie. 'Cause I want you to stay with me..."(Page 13) This shows
“Of Mice and Men” is a novel written by John Steinbeck. It is about two men, George Milton and Lennie Small, who go to work or a ranch in California together. The author sums it up best in the front of the book, “An intimate portrait of two men who cherish the slim bond between them and the dream they share in a world marred by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealously and callousness. George and his simple minded friend Lennie cling to each other in their loneliness and dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens and rabbits in the country where land is cheap”. (Steinbeck 3) George is a small man who’s quick with a dark face and restless eyes.
Despite Lennie’s best efforts to keep the dream it was not meant to be. Although Lennie is very child-like mentally, he is physically very strong and doesn’t realise his own strength. Consequently he does ‘bad’ things unintentionally, such as killing his puppy and Curley’s wife. Steinbeck continuously foreshadowed this event using a bad omen, “clashed the chains of their halters”. The word “clashed” has connotations of violence, the way Steinbeck has used this word as part of the bad omen could suggest that the dream ends in a violent way.
Even though they are very good friends, George and Lennie have many differences. Many people are afraid of Lennie much more than George just from their physical features. George was very small as said on page 2, “The first man was small and quick…” Without Lennie he might not be able to get out of some of the problems he has been in, although most were caused by Lennie. Lennie on the other hand was large also said on page 2, “Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man…” Lennie could do a lot of damage to people which
Jesus Christ you’re a crazy bastard!” “God you’re a lot of trouble” “I could get along so easy and nice if I didn’t have you on my tail. I could live so easy…” “might jus’ as well spen’ all my time tellin ‘you things…” This quote suggests that, George gets fed up of looking after Lennie all the time. He feels that he is a lot of trouble and he’s too much to handle. The last quote suggests that George has nothing better to do in life than look out for Lennie. George is very modest in the
The author also had the characters using the “B” word a lot when they were talking about Curely’s wife and the mother dog. The language also tells you the time period the characters are set in. The last important thing that I chose was repetition. They repeated words and sentences quite a few times; they said them over and over in the book. Lennie said the word “rabbit” because he wanted a pet rabbit and it symbolized him and George getting their own farm.
In the novel 'of Mice and Men' written by John Steinbeck, one of the protagonist who names George travels with his friend Lennie, they find a new job in the ranch and try to adapt themselves to new circumstance. During this time, they meet an old swamper whose name is Candy. Generally, Candy and George are different because they have different backgrounds, and they are similar because they have the same wishes about their futures. To start with, the reason why George chooses to come and work on the ranch is that Lennie and George have no choice but to leave their hometown. In the novel, George and his friend Lennie worked in their hometown-- Weed.
George assumes the role of Lennie’s keeper by giving him protection from getting into trouble, being a role model, and giving Lennie a companionship the way a big brother would. If it weren’t for George keeping Lennie out of trouble he would most likely be living a hard life in jail. Throughout the novel Lennie has shown many times that he cannot seem to stay out of trouble, which is when George comes to save the day. For example, George tries to keep Lennie out of Curley’s way, knowing that he has a grudge against him. When George hears that Curley hates big people he takes action knowing that Curley will hurt Lennie at any chance he gets he tells Lennie, “ Look Lennie, You try to keep away from him, will you?
The 15 year old Christopher Boone of ‘The Curious Incident’ suffers under the Asperger syndrome and therefore has a different perspective on life than normal people. Lennie Small, who plays one of the main characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’ is mentally retarded and needs to get through a tough life style in another way. Although Lennie of ‘Of Mice and Men’ is among the principal character, he perhaps is the least dynamic. He does not change, develop or grow throughout the novel and remains the same for most of the time. Lennie is mentally retarded, which can be seen in his actions; he loves to pet soft things, is very faithful to George and their vision of the farm and possesses incredible physical strength.
Miguel Hernandez Professor Kayser English 52 7 May 2012 The American Dream in Of Mice and Men In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck gives life to relatable characters through the desire of the American Dream. Due to their social class, characters like George, Lennie, and Curley’s wife dream for a better life that includes a farm, rabbit garden, and fame. George and Lennie’s dream to own land is more attainable than Curley’s wife yearning for stardom. Steinbeck foreshadows their failure to fulfill their dreams by creating a number of obstacles for each character to face. While they all had a different dream, one crucial aspect remained the same; they all wanted a better life than the one they were living.
