American Obesity Epidemic Joe-Anne McCormick Anthropology 101 Jonathan Sharpe October 25, 2010 The American culture in the last 30 years has become obese. Obesity among African American and Hispanic children and adults is a growing epidemic in the United States. However,” obesity among immigrants may reflect adaptation of the U.S. lifestyle, such as increased sedentary behavior and poor dietary patterns.”(Goel, 2004) Nutritionists and health experts say that obesity is linked to serious and life-threatening illnesses and disabilities that carry enormous economic and public health costs. (Loonin 2007) Such health problems include heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.…show more content…
These risk factors increase your chance of having heart disease and other health problems, such as diabetes and stroke. (NIH) Metabolic syndrome is a series of abnormal health condition that indicates a high risk for developing heart problems and type 2 diabetes. It’s a fact that children are considered to have metabolic syndrome when they have any two or three of the following abnormalities. 1. Abdominal Obesity, fat that accumulates in the abdominal area. 2.Low HDL cholesterol also known as good cholesterol because it helps remove bad cholesterol 3.Elevated triglycerides they are a type of aft that circulates through the blood stream and are attached to lipoprotein. 4. High blood pressure when the pressure of blood exerts on the walls of the vessels as it’s pumped along by the heart. 5. Glucose intolerance which means blood sugar levels goes up after eating, but not as high as in cases of diabetes. According to M.L.
