Unit 1.1 Title : Promoting a health and safety culture within my organisation Author : Date : 20th July 2011 I have introduced behavioural and cultural change within my organization by using a series of initiatives which form a holistic approach to health and safety. The initiative named ‘The Hearts and Minds Approach’ (H&M Model) formed a robust model. The H&M model was designed and introduced due to improve the culture of company road vehicle users. The model was introduced in 2010 and remains fit for purpose, however its parts are under constant development to ensure the momentum for sustainability. There is no ‘shelf life’ to this model as the organizations intention will always be to ensure the workforce returns home in a health and safe condition. Driving is a very emotive subject with many drivers having the opinion that they ‘know best’ and it was difficult to improve and develop drivers without their co-operation. I began by approaching our insurance company with a view to improving our policy and procedures to reduce our on going road risk. The insurance provider recognised our positive approach and their ‘risk engineers’ worked with us to plan the initial steps to managing occupational road risk. There was a 6 month research period where several online programs were piloted and throughout the process a review was made by seeking feedback from the users. The insurance provider was able to offer a ‘health and safety risk fund’ which initially funded the project. Each element of the H&M model was developed by ‘bolting’ on to what had already worked and by networking with large blue chip companies such as; Ford, HP and Devere, I was able to share best practice which enabled me to focus on processes which would work in my organization to promote the health and safety culture.
