Nursing diagnosis is a way to express care needs that identify those who receive care, enabling application of possible nursing interventions. Such diagnoses also lead to possible standardized language among nurses and contribute to the development of nursing knowledge. The NANDA International classification(20) brings together a set of nursing diagnoses. Therefore, the language used in NANDA-I helps professionals to communicate their experiences with patients. It also contributes to patient care by classifying nursing phenomena and standardizing language among nurses.
If a theory is proven, it can help to develop nursing science and be used in nursing practice to accomplish numerous results such as identifying standards of care to direct, evaluate, and predict patient care/outcomes, for example (Cherry & Jacob, 2011). Development of a sound theory commands the presence of not only key concepts, but also great insight toward the particular subject matter; it’s definitions, and the assumptions surrounding it. This is critical to ensure a well-educated appraisal and study follows. (Alligood & Tomey, 2010). Relatively speaking, applying the concepts of stress in relation to adaptation of a particular health circumstance, for instance, may provide a speculative overview that will yield a methodical interpretation of how these two incidents are entwined with one another (Cherry & Jacob, 2011).
Today, considerable focus in nursing science has been on integration of knowledge into practice, largely with increased attention to evidence based practice and translation research (McEwen & Willis, 2014). There are different types of nursing theories and these theories are developed for the purpose of explaining and describing nursing care. Examples include; Environment theory, Interpersonal theory, Adaptation theory, Goal Attainment theory, etc. I have chosen to focus on Dorothea Orem’s self-care theory for the purpose of this paper in which I will analyze the importance of nursing theory and highlight the key ideas of the self-care theory. Importance of Nursing Theory Nursing theory provides the foundation for nursing research which develops nursing practice.

My long term-goal, professionally, is to become a clinical educator. Mateo (1998) described clinical educator role in a clinical setting include clinical and professional development of staffs. In clinical development, main responsibility of the educator nurse is to provide structured program for orientation, in-service program and evaluate competency of staffs. Professional development of a staff is also one of many important roles.
This framework defines nursing as a profession rather than a task-based job. It also provides structures that allow the nurse to function as a professional, as a colleague and supports the organization and effective use of resources. The UVA Nursing Care Delivery System: The care delivery system endorsed by the UVA PNSO is Relationship-Based Care. Relationship-Based Care is a framework that identifies the three fundamental relationships that define the patient experience: the nurses’ relationships to self, to colleagues, and to patients and families. Relationship-Based Care aligns with the organizational goals and values and provides a synergistic approach to excellent outcomes.
I will first provide an overview of the issue in relation to both these fields of nursing and discuss why it is important and the impact it has on nursing care. I will then highlight any similarities and/or differences that may rise between the two fields. Adult nurses provide a high standard of essential personal care with dignity and compassion, while also being able to undertake complex interventions and use specialist skills, such as communication-the basic skill needed to survive as a nurse. Philippa Sully (2003) stated that “development of effective working relationships underpins all aspects of nursing practice. Whether we are exploring the best way to arrange shift cover or discuss with patients and their families the most appropriate community care, how we communicate depends on our professional relationships with all those involved.” In other words, communication is a key aspect in nursing as a whole.

Reflective Essay Throughout this assignment I will explore what reflection is and why it has such importance in nursing practice. I will then explore specifically reflection in action and reflection on action and their impact on nursing practice. I will also look at the relevance of critical reflection and the impact it has on the professional development of the practitioner. I will focus on these areas as I feel they have relevance to my own professional development and nursing role. Although they are only small areas of the sphere of what reflection is, due to word limitation confining the assignment to these areas will allow me to ensure critical examination is achieved.
