Topic: Norms & Values Name: Zac Norms are the repetitive action of the people of the society that are used as guidelines for the people to act upon them. Norms are divided into different segment such as Folkways and Mores. Firstly, Folkways are normally associated with the moral actions. Folkways are concerned with the things such as dress code in a situation, good social manners, eating habits, wearing appropriate clothing, respecting the privacy of strangers and eating food with the proper tools and things like that. It guides them to behave in a certain condition. One of a very good example of a Folkway as a Columbia College student or resident of Vancouver would be eating with my hands in a restaurant which affect my behaviour that I will consider as rude. Secondly, Mores are referred to the fundamental needs of society, whereas Mores are norms of morality. Another good example of a mores that affect our lives would be attending to a church in nude which will also offend most people of a culture. We must value human life. Very often, Mores are declared in negative terms in which refer to Taboos such as animals used for scientific experiments for instance how they're bred which affects our lives because we use a lot of animals for scientific testing to create antibiotics. Values are form of cultures. When certain things are applied in a culture on the constant basis and then it becomes a value of that specific culture. A value involve society behaviours such as person freedom, democracy, truth, social responsibility, honesty, role of men and woman, love, justice, marriage and more. So these all are the part of a culture and they become values of the society. Values are not only concepts about cultures but also in terms of emotions. Values are very important for individuals or groups that people are ready to give up everything in order to protect the
