DBQ- Nobility The nobility in France were powerful and wealth class in the beginning of 16th century but their power and wealth was slowly being surpassed until the 18th century. The nobility used to be a military service instead of a country having standing army. A family always was nobility because it was passed down from generation to generation. Nobility were high officials in the government and had a lot of power. Many peasants or people other than nobility, thought that they were corrupted. Ideas of the nobility changed over the years. Peasants didn’t like them and thought they were protected, nobles like that their power was hereditary, and sword noblemen didn’t like the robe noblemen. When he was king as a child, the nobles broke into his house and almost killed him. Since then he never trusted them. Under Louis XIII’s chief minister Richelieu, a new nobility was handpicked by him. They were called the Rope nobility. Gillies Andre believed that the sword nobility (old nobility) was the pinnacle of human achievement and won their renown by military exploits. (Doc 9) He says “he pinnacle of human achievement and the leaders of the first hierarchy to appear among men. Someone who has recently received a noble title from the king may in time become a gentleman, but he can never be a member of this race of warriors, because he will always lack the ancient roots that it requires.” As part of the sword nobility, it isn’t surprising that he is against the new nobility. He believes that they are not qualified for the office. Henri, also a sword nobleman, says “There is no longer any reward for virtue, since all power now belongs to favors…” (Doc 4). There is no surprise that he is angry. He says that the sword nobility is banished from judicial and financial affairs. Their power is now greatly weakened. Baron Francois believed that the nobleman should complain because all you need now is to be wealth and buy the office. (Doc 11) You don’t need to have any military attributes. They were feared by most people and everyone had their own views. The peasants thought that they were being protected because they got away with most things. The peasants didn’t like them because they were corrupted. The sword noblemen hated the robe noblemen. They didn’t think that they were equal because they had no military ancestors. They didn’t like how they bought their offices and were automatically classified nobles. Nobles liked how their status was hereditary but others didn’t. People didn’t like them boasting their status.
