Not much is known of Machiavelli’s early life, however records show that he had received a good education. He was rigorously trained to manhood by his father, and was taught grammar, rhetoric, and Latin by various tutors. He did not learn Greek, even though Florence was at that time one of the centers of Greek scholarship in Europe. At the age of 25 he entered Florentine government service as a clerk and as an ambassador. Later that year (1494) Florence restored the republic, expelling the Medici family who had ruled over Florence for some sixty years. Machiavelli was in diplomatic council responsible for negotiation and military affairs, undertaking diplomatic missions to the courts of Louis XII in France, Ferdinand II of Aragon, in Spain, and the Papacy in Rome. From 1502 to 1503 he witnessed the effective state-building methods of soldier-churchman Cesare Borgia who was at that time enlarging the central Italian territories. Between 1503 and 1506 he was responsible for the Florentine militia including the city’s defense. In August 1512, the Medici family, helped by Pope Julius II, regained power in Florence and the republic was dissolved.
