This essay will examine the negative impacts that the ‘Throwaway’ society presents in the Pacific. It will first look at the issue from an environmental perspective where the land, air and water-ways are impacted. Secondly, the essay examines the problems of the throwaway society from an economic view where loss of money and loss of potential to better ones financial stance are discussed. Finally, it highlights the social impacts of the throwaway society on an individual or community. The conclusion is that if the problems of the throwaway society are not taken heed of now then the future generation would suffer most. In today’s society there exists the overwhelming need to acquire products of either the most fashionable, affordable, reliable or convenient characteristic that best appeals to consumers regardless of the fact that the present item obtained is still of faithful representation of its purpose. An action of such nature by a society gives rise to the term ‘Throwaway’ Society, powerfully prejudiced by consumerism where the products that fulfill their purpose are replaced by newer models. In the Pacific, with many small island nations, the throwaway society inevitably permits consequences. When certain factors such as geometry and lifestyle are taken into account, the problems of a throwaway society may prove to be calamitous. This paper theorizes that the negative impacts of a throwaway society can be categorized as environmental, economic and social. Firstly, with the polemic issue of a throwaway society there exist negative environmental impacts which include pollution and exploitation of natural resources.
