I will also be looking for any social sanctions and/or controls and how to respectively research and organize them. Not standing for the national anthem is an ineffective and counterproductive way to promote a cause. President Obama expressed his concerns that not standing for the national anthem can get it the way of the message, he stated that,” As a general matter, when it comes to the flag the national anthem and the meaning it holds for our men and women in uniform and those who’ve fought for us.” (Obama). Not standing for the national anthem is a legal form of peaceful protest, which is an First Amendment right. Refusing to stand for the national angers many and shows the division in country. The national Anthem has caused division lines between teams, fans, and across the country as whole. Fans have burned Jerseys to show distastes and the anger they feel. Americans have stood for the U.S. flag since June 14, 1777, the day the Continental Congress declared, “that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In the article I read about the flag, it gave reasons. The article is called, “5 reasons we stand for the flag”, it stated that we stand for the flag today, not to please ourselves but to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It stated,” that more than 1.2 million Americans have died because of war.” It also said, “we stand for the flag not to focus on what divides us but what unites us, which is being an American.” (5 reasons we stand for the flag). “The name of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always exalt The just pride of patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations. With slight shades of difference, you have the same religion, manners, habits, and political principles.”
