My Reading and Writing Struggles Throughout the years, reading and writing have been difficult for me. I have always had a hard time to read and understand what I have read, which has been very difficult with writing book reports. When I read, I understand most of the words and even some of the paragraphs make sense, but when I get to the end of each page, it’s like nothing registered, almost like I hadn’t even read it at all. I learned about my reading and comprehension problem in the early years of my education. My fifth grade year was the year it all began. I was in middle school and this was the year we needed to pick up more responsibility, to not rely on parents and teachers as much as previous years. The new responsibilities were great until I was required to pick a book of my choice, read it and do a report. My memory is not the best, so I don’t recall the book I chose, but I do remember that I did not do very well, not remembering details and events that happened in it. I used the back cover to do most of it and the teacher, Mr. Bougie, knew it. When he handed me back the book report, he looked at me with a smirk and said, “You should read the whole book next time.” Not only did I fail, but to have my teacher look at me and comment that way upset me. I wasn’t interested much about reading in the first place, and that made it even worse. Mr. Bougie was a pretty decent guy, but as a teacher he wasn’t very inspiring; teaching was just a job for him it seemed. I did manage to make it through fifth grade and the following year with the same struggles but kept moving on. When I was in the seventh grade, it was the first time I felt good about writing a book report. My teacher, Mr. Sterris, who seemed to take his job much more serious than Mr. Bougie, had me choose a book to read and do a report on it. This time I chose a book that interested me a
