The essay “Se Habla Espanol” by writer Tanya Barrientos is a first person narrative describing her life experiences starting from her childhood up through her adult years. Tanya Barrientos is a first generation immigrant, coming from Guatemala at the age of three. In her memoir, Barrientos explains how Americans at that time were not culturally tolerant, and foreigners were expected to “leave their cultural baggage at the border.” As a result, her parents immerse her into the American culture by speaking only English, to ensure her success. However, in doing so she became ashamed of her ethnicity, and failed to identify with her native culture (Roen, Glau, & Maid 2011). .

Mira’s negligence was clear to Mukherjee after she had been driven away from Canada. The state of an immigrant’s preference is as how he chooses his lifestyle. Welfare Reform: The Facts Since the Social Security Act of 1935, many people have become the worthless in our country. Even though the Act had good intentions to provide single mothers with children income for daily living expenses, the program has become widely misused or in many cases abused. The Federal Government ran the program for nearly sixty years before realizing there were many loopholes that needed fixed or adjusted. The recipients of this aid had no motivation to find work because there were no set limits or guidelines for how long you could receive these government benefits. Welfare, as we know it, has been abused and continues to be abused today.

She comes from a family that values a good work ethic and working as a farm worker is more important than reading books and at times sacrificing education. In foreign countries it’s also extremely difficult to get an education. In some countries it’s even more difficult and most times impossible for women to further or even get any education. Parents risk their lives for a better future. In the article “My Life in the Shadows” by Reyna Wences she tells the story of how she and her family illegally crossed the border to meet up with her father in Chicago. The whole goal was to cross the border undetected to give her children the opportunity to be apart of the DREAM act when of the right age.
