Mexico City, Mexico 3) When did you begin to learn English? 1995-1996 I worked with a lady who had a daughter and I taught her Spanish and was learning English by watching her television shows. Such as, Sesame Street and Barney. 4) How long before you felt you could fluently speak English? 2 years 5) Since English was not taught in public schools; how did you learn the English language?
I am so very excited to see them excel in school. My little Evie is three and all she talks about is school, how she cannot wait to go and truthfully I can’t wait for her to go either. You see, once my girls are in school I will be able to go back to work and have adult conversations on a regular basis again. My days of changing dirty diapers, potty training, and watching cartoons all day will be behind me. Then I read the part of Welty’s story where Phoenix has to cross the creek and she said “Now comes the trial”.
In the essay, “Mother Tongue,” by Amy Tan emphasizes the idea that we all speak different languages unconsciously and also we are categorized by the way we speck. In the essay Tan observes experiences that made her realized the different types of “Englishes” she uses. The first time she became aware was when giving a talk about her book, “The Joy Club,” she saw her mother in the audience and she realized that she had been using academic language learned from books, a language she had never used with her mother. The second time she noticed one of her “Englishes” was when talking with her mother and husband, she said “not waste money that way” which for her is an intimate language used only by her family. Tan emphasizes that fact that her mother recognizes her opportunities and interaction in life are limited by her English.
Then I finally guessed my answer, “Yes”. Everyone sitting around me was laughing, but I didn’t know why. I got into middle school; it was really hard for me to learn new language. One day in English class, the teacher asked me a question but I didn’t know what the answer was, to be straight, I didn’t even understand what she said. At that moment, a classmate next to me gave me the answer.
Tanya’s parents did this because they wanted her to fit into this, “red, white and blue world.”(pg 8) They wanted her to be able to speak the English language without a hint of the Spanish accent. Her parents said that by doing so people would look past the ethnicity and only see an American girl. Tanya tries to relate with her audience by speaking a bit of Spanish in her essay. Some of the words she uses are Latinos, ingles, and gringa. By using these words she can relate to both the American and Latino audiences, while also showing her knowledge of the Spanish language.
1. High level of language development Graciella entered school speaking very little English, but caught right on. By the end of first grade, she was one of the top readers in the class. In the past, Graciella’s brother has accompanied his mother to parent/teacher conferences to translate. This year, they’re thinking that Graciella may be able to do a better job.
Imagine you are Miss Caroline. Write a letter to a friend, where you recount your experiences of your first day teaching at May comb County Primary Dear Prue, My first day teaching at May Comb County was a fascinating experience that has enabled me to learn a large amount about the town of May comb and the students in my class. I would have presumed for only the first grade, a large majority of the class would hardly know the alphabet but I was very mistaken. Every boy and girl in the classroom knew the alphabet from back to front, at first I thought this was just outstanding until I realised that the majority of them had repeated the first grade. I’ve learnt that these children do not have patience or respect, while I was trying to teach they a story they were squirming round like pigs.
Positive Behavior Support Teacher Interview Shabena Din Grand Canyon University: SPE 522 May 8, 2013 Positive Behavior Support Teacher Interview With first look, I thought that this interview would be rather simple, with the fact I did not need to be pressure concerning who to interview. I work in a school; consequently I thought I would objectively interview the English as a Second Language teacher that I had worked with in my school and then be finished with the assignment. Then a few days later, I figured that I am familiar with most of what the ESL teacher would answer in reply to my questions. For this reason I appropriated to take this assignment a slight farther and make a determination to interview a first grade special
Returning To School Sandra L. Walker Professor Melody Debonnel English Composition 1 December, 10 2012 Returning To School Returning to school has allowed me to open and explore opportunities to find out things about myself that I didn’t know before re-entering school. Making the decision to return to school I decided to return to school after I had been out for over forty years. I graduated from high school in 1969, I enjoyed attending high school and I always knew that I wanted to further my education. I had my first child right after I graduated high school and my college was put on hold because I chose to start working and take care of my family. Many years passed and I still had college in the back of my mind, once my children got older and to the ages where they were able to
The Future of Students Equals Change in Everyone The American people make excuses over and over about why our children are struggling in school, but the true question we need to ask is: why aren’t we doing enough to make a change? A few years ago the elementary school that my children attend had implemented a dual language program. After four years, my children were fluent in Spanish. This program was doing so well, that ninety eight percent of the children in the program tested out gifted. Unfortunately somewhere down the line, the school board members at the district, and state level didn’t think the program was worth keeping.
