Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the brain and the spine, eventually it ends in not being able to control muscles, loss of vision, not being able to balance, and numbness. When you suffer from multiple sclerosis the brain and spine are damaged by the immune system, this is known as an autoimmune disease. The symptoms- The symptoms affect every person differently, they vary on how much damage has been done to the nerves. Some symptoms include: -visual Problems: the visual problems are one of the first to occur normally.…show more content…
Some people might find that they will cry or laugh for no reason. They can also feel really tired. -bladder problems: the bladder is controlled by the nervous system, so MS might cause bladder issues, such as no control of the bladder resulting in wetting themselves, or needing the toilet more than normal. Billy had trouble with his balance and his bladder a lot, he also suffered from a few muscle spasms which caused him to go to the Doctors. The causes of multiple sclerosis: MS happens because of the damage to the nerve fibres of the central nervous system. Your nervous system consists of the brain and spine is responsible for controlling action, and the conscious and unconscious of your body. It still isn’t clear what causes MS, but it is suspected that it is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, this means that its partly due to genes you get from your parents and partly from outside factors which could be the trigger for the condition. There are also 7 conditions which have symptoms that are similar to MS making it even harder to be able to diagnose it. Also if you have only suffered one attack of symptoms associated with MS, then it is hard to try and diagnose it. But once someone has had a relapse of the symptoms then they are able to diagnose it for sure. Ways to diagnose it: Neurological examination: your neurologist is there to look for changes or any weaknesses in your eyes, leg and hand co-ordination, balance, speech and your reflexes. This will show if your nerves are damaged. MRI: an MRI scan creates a detailed image of your brain and your spine. MRI scans show whether there is any damage of scarring of your nervous system. Most people are diagnosed with MS through MRI scans. The procedure is painless and usually takes around 10-30 minutes, a standard MRI scanner is like a tube, the machine is quite noisy. Lumbar Puncture: it is also known as a spinal tap. A sample of your fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord is taking with use of a needle inserted into the area around your spinal cord. This is done whilst under local anaesthetic, which means that you will still be awake but the area the needle is entering will be numbed. The sample is tested for any antibodies, if there it means that your immune system has been fighting a disease in your nervous
