Jazmun Thomas Ms. Edgar English 1 30 January 2014 Invisible Shackles “Human trafficking is commonly referred to as “modern day slavery”. It is the illegal trade of human beings for forced labor or for exploitation.” (Sandrina 1) This type of slavery is just being recognized by the government. “Human trafficking is a very serious situation that must be taken care of” according to Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times. The book Bad Traffic by Simon Lewis accurately portrays human trafficking through a realistic situation. One of the leading causes of human trafficking is poverty. “It has been documented that poverty leads to a lack of education leading to no employment and that leading to sex trafficking” (Duren et al. 1). Jian didn’t have much money so they had to be migrant workers for the rest of their lives. Mya wasn’t able to attend school for that very reason. While they were on break for work, someone came up to her and told her that they had better work for her there. When Mya was protected from the traffickers she kept saying that she couldn’t get the memory out of her head. “I keep daydreaming about it, I wanna forget please help.”(Lewis 245) Approximately 61% of returned victims also encounter some PTSD symptoms.
