Tom Robinson exemplifies how racism prohibits justice and fairness in the town of Maycomb. Tom Robinson is a black man that is not treated fairly because of his race. In the town maycomb no one is ever going to believe a black man over a white man. The people in the town are prepared to accept the word of the ignorant Bob Ewell over a decent black man. How the town perceives Tom has a lot to do with how he is treated.
(Page 217/218) No black man should feel sorry for a white person. The witnesses of this cross examination were shocked and this shows how prejudice they were- they believed that no black man can feel sorry for their superiors. Another factor that was deeply prejudice during Tom Robinson’s trial, was when Mr Gilmer has trouble trusting Tom’s statement when Tom says that he helped Mayella out of kindness and no money. He did not believe a black man could do a simple chore from the goodness of their heart for nothing! Also when Tom is called big buck- Mr Gilmer is treating Tom as if he were more of an animal.
The black man is punished for a crime that he did not commit because of his race. In the novel, racial words are used often. Words such as nigger and negroe . It wasn t known for white folks and black folks to be together unless it was work associated. If it was seen, people would say, why s he sittin with the colored folks?

To begin, her husband, Ross feels as though he has married beneath himself, and he does not love her anymore. Their marriage was most likely caused by Jean getting pregnant with their son, which made Ross feel like he had to marry her out of force. In the story, Ross specifically tells their son, Kevin that he should try not to marry beneath himself because he will end up stuck in the same situation as him.
Nathaniel, a black youth from Pontiac, Michigan grew up without a father. This is why I strongly believe he did so of the things he did because he somewhat felt like he was alone and he just wanted to be notice. He never learned the responsibility of his actions but his mother tried to get him help but no one would help her because she knew that her child would get into serious trouble if she didn’t. People would also say Nathaniel’s case, it can be said that his lack of a positive role[->0] model, or father figure lead to his criminal activities. His mother, Gloria, was struggling to raise three children by herself.

He also received rejection by his peers, when they often teased him because of his deformity. Parental and Family Risk Factors: His mother used a very authoritarian style to shape and control her sons. This caused irreparable damage to Gein throughout growing up. She was very rude to him and would not even speak to him. It was not until Derek finally cracked and had told his mother that Morso was the only reason he was still alive and he was the one person that was always there for him and he was like family to Derek, that she realised there was nothing bad about Morso. The thing that made it the hardest was when his mother sent them to school almost as soon as they had returned. They were not ready for school or anything like that, it was even hard for them to try and socialise with new people. Derek and Morso’s lives had been so unstructed, that the common school setting was not appropriate for them.

Scout’s view against her father were also changing. Before she thought that Atticus was different from the other fathers in Maycomb because he was too old and couldn’t do anything fun with them.
In the book Johnny has lived a life of being beaten up by his father and ignored by his mother. The only reason he does not run away is because the gang has replaced the family unit. Johnny’s parents do not even know where he is half the time because they are too drunk to notice anything. Because of this, Johnny often feels unwanted, uncared for, and
Prejudice is a preconceived opinion not based on reason or experience. Sometimes prejudice is a destructive force in society. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, prejudice is shown in many ways. Prejudice was shown when Atticus was defending the jail, a group of men came to kill Tom and also when Scout was getting teased at school by other kids because her dad was taking Tom’s case. Furthermore, when Tom Robinson was accused of being guilty even though he was not, and died because of it.
