Stephen Han Favorable Outcome The media and the rest of society sets a standard to what they believe success is, and the horrible thing is people actually look up to that standard. Success has various definitions, because it is all about perspective. It makes people do the things they do and ultimately shapes the way they live. Everybody strives to achieve their goal to attain their image of success. Many categories affect the way we reach success such as gender, class, or even ethnicity. Ethnicity has affected me especially, being a Korean living in the United States. In the story of “My Life is Average” by Mike Rose, he talks about how kids and people at a young age will only strive to a goal that you set. This talks about the relationship between a teacher and a student; it is the teacher’s job to make sure the students can comprehend the lesson they are teaching, but I also think it is the student’s job to be able to take all of the information in and retain it. Teachers need to be aware if their students are struggling with their education, while students need to stay motivated. What I perceive Rose is trying to say is that teachers need to keep high standards because they are responsible for the students that depend on it. I believe this to be relevant in every single person’s life. Similarly, my pastor taught me indirectly about the bible which influenced my religious beliefs. At a young age, I struggled with the confusion of what to believe in and was caught up in mischief. As a result, many adults tried to intervene about my ill behavior, but none of them actually took the time to truly help me change my ways. Luckily, my pastor just happened to have an enormous amount of determination and decided to never give up on me. He wanted me to have discipline and know how to handle my responsibilities. My pastor being Christian transmitted that same belief toward me, bringing me closer to the love of God. My definition of success is greatly influenced by being a tradition Korean and a devout Christian. Success is the reason why I am going to make the decisions I do. I believe it happens in progression and after knocking down one thing after the other is the only way to move ahead. Bambara and Rose have compelling concepts in their stories that illustrate the boundaries of our success that are determined by our ethnicity and type of education we receive.
