1. Do you believe that Merck acted in a socially responsible and the ethical manner with regard to Vioxx? Why or Why not? In your answer, please address the company’s drug development and testing, marketing and advertising, relationship with government regulators and policymakers, and handling of the recall. Comparison of the results of method and identify which one is the most appropiate method under these circumstances, and why. The issue related to Merck, one of the best companies which work socially responsible, and known for ethical procedures in the business, is Vioxx. Vioxx is in a group of a blockbuster drugs. It is the type of medicine that it could “control chronical but usually nonfatal conditions that afflicted large number of people with health insurance” (Lawrence &Weber, pp. 484). Its use is to kill the pain and inflammation.. This drug has the capability to block the enzyme that causes pain without harming the stomach.. In September of 2004, Merck recalled Vioxx. This product was associated with heart attacks, strokes, and also 55,000 deaths (Lawrence &Weber, pp. 481). The best understanding of the issue is to apply the four ethical methods, and the optimal solution is when all lead to the same solution. Analyzing the performance of Merck under an ethical decision framework is necessary to evaluate Virtues ethics, Utilitarian, Rights and Justice Methods. Virtues Ethics: Persuing a “Good” Life. To evaluate virtues ethics, it is necessary to define what the term means. They are the moral values that guide people who want to have correct behavior. There are several virtues: for instance, one list of virtues was given by Solomon -- honesty, trust, and toughness (Lawrence & Weber, pp. 87).
