Adjustment to health change or crisis The following essay attempts to discuss and analyse the services users perspective of adjusing to change.I will be referring to the service user as Jimmy, who's name i have changed due to confidentiality in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008). A brief history, and diagnosis of the service user will be included and some theories of adjustment and change will be applied to the circumstances from a psychosocial point of view. This assignment will focus on the particular issues surrounding adjustment, cognitive appraisal and coping. It will also be discussing nursing intervention and their effectiveness in helping to facilitate change. Jimmy is a 49 year old single man.When speaking to Jimmy he stated that he has not had a good life and has always felt that he is unloved, worthless and displays low self estem. Jimmy was taken into care at the age of 4 and although was fostered to various homes this was never for long due to his challenging behaviour, resulting in him returning to the childrens home.Jimmy reported that he played traunt from school due to being bullied by his peers and therefore has limited education.At the age of 12 Jimmy was already consuming large ammounts of alcohol ,and shop lifting to fund this habit. Jimmy spent some time in prison , where he was diagnosed with having bipolar. Jimmy has spent most of his adult life in and out of prision , when out of prison Jimmy lived on the streets. The last 7 years Jimmy spent sleeping rough, while on the street Jimmy was knocked down by a car while intoxicated which resulted inJimmy breaking his hip and an admision into hospital. While on the hospital ward Jimmy was seen by the mental health team who assessed Jimmy as needing support , which is how he arrived at the residential home where I spent my placement.
