Take an individual who has a hearing impairment to a quiet, well lit area to talk. Make sure that hearing aids are working or that glasses prescriptions are updated.
Discovering the triggers for wandering are not always easy, but they can provide insights to dealing with the behavior. • Hoarding – they may hide things, in draws, under matress etc as it makes them feel safe and in control • Repetition - People with dementia will often repeat a word, statement, question or activity over and over. While this type of behavior is usually harmless for the person with dementia, it can be annoying and stressful to caregivers. Sometimes the behavior is triggered by anxiety, boredom, fear or environmental factors. Respond with reassurance and comfort.
Identify barrier to communication. Sometimes you will find you are unable to communicate effectively in the work place for a number of reasons. Knowing about different barriers you may come across will help to avoid difficulties and adapt your approach where necessary. Environmental factors –noise impairs listening and concentration. Poor lighting can prevent a person from noticing non-verbal communication and could reduce a hearing impaired person’s ability to lip read.
Some could argue that smell doesn’t always necessarily bring back a memory. For example if you enter a building or space you have never been in before it may not trigger a certain memory like other buildings are able to. Some could also argue that vision is greater in producing a fond memory more so than smell because some people may be more drawn to a certain object such as a toy that is able to trigger a negative or positive memory from their childhood. On page 293, Pallasmaa also says “Why do abandoned houses always have the same hollow smell? Is it because the particular smell is stimulated by emptiness observed by the eye?
For those that suffer from sensitivity related to smell, problems of smearing their own faeces is not uncommon as they may like the texture so as an alternative, jelly or corn flour and water should be introduced instead together with stronger smelling items. Those suffering from touch sensory related problems may dislike the texture or pressure of clothes on their skin and a possible solution to this maybe to turn their clothes inside out so there is no seam, remove any tags or labels and allow the person to wear clothes they're comfortable
These verbal and nonverbal gestures act like punctuation in a conversation and can often lead to misunderstandings or communication failure and that is when all things start to fall apart between one another. (Sole, 2011) “To become a more effective communicator, scholars would most likely agree that five specific aspects of interpersonal communication are crucial areas of focus. Interpersonal communication is a lifelong study that requires ongoing practice for everyone”. And I know from now own I will be listening and communicating very carefully with my soul mate. So that we can avoid future disagreements with each other, and to make sure that we get our situations taken care of the first time around.
As a care worker me and my colleagues need to consider our own attitudes and interactions with a person with dementia. Any negative attitudes and interactions from others will add to the individual’s negative feelings and experience of disability. Just because they have dementia and forget things and appear confused does not mean that they don’t have feelings and emotions. A positive attitude and smiling face might help them forgetting only for a few moments how ill they really are, and brighten up their day just for a few minutes. As well as a negative attitude and a sad pitiful face might increase the individual’s negative feelings and increase the speed of the deterioration of the brain through
Most people are, or would like to be here if they are ill and are trying to improve their bad health. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones that live in an optimum wellness world, then more power to you! If you are one of the many sufferers of chronic or acute illness, these are probably some of the lifestyle choices that were poorly made by you. Lack of exercise, cholesterol consumption, cigarette smoking, drinking too many alcoholic beverages, drug abuse, stress (work, school, and family), and the list goes on. These and so many other “bad choices” can take you right out of the neutral zone and increase your chances for major illness and maybe even
