The United Stated is no stranger to the discussion of legalization of substances. Since the days before the prohibition in the 1920’s most regulations were through social sanctions and responses to intoxication, and proclamations against the use of various substances also included laws forbidding the consumption of coffee and smoking tobacco (Jeffery, 2001). The restrictions on the use and distribution of drugs in the U.S on the federal level were less than 100 years old, and prior to the early 1900’s restrictions on drugs were on the state and local level. Yet as times changed the morality movement against alcohol had begun to take hold throughout the country. Thus the Prohibition movements began, along the women's suffrage of newly empowered

Where the Question lies Many people in the United States ask the question, “Why marijuana should be legalized?” when the real question is, “Why is marijuana illegal?” Marijuana was once a totally banned controlled substance in all fifty states. Slowly but surely the U.S states one by one are legalizing marijuana for medical reasons and so on. California and Colorado are the two states that have gone through their government and passed the law to legally sell and buy marijuana with the proper ID’s to verify acceptance. Some states have considered it before while other states hate the thought of legalizing this substance. Alcohol is a legal substance in our country yet people die every day from it rather it be liver problems or become a
Another compromise is the decriminalization of marijuana; if someone is to be in possession of less than one ounce then it is just a misdemeanor. Though prohibitionists are still pushing to keep all harmful drugs illegal and pro drug supporters are still aiming for more laws to be passed legalizing drugs. Neither side is done fighting for their cause. In the 1920’s the eighteenth amendment establishes the prohibition of alcohol in the United States. This was a nationwide ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages (Eighteenth Amendment).
Introduction In recent years, there has been a strong pressure on state legislatures across the US to legalize or decriminalize use and possession of specified amounts of cannabis and/ or to pass laws that allow smoking of crude cannabis plant (also known as marijuana, weed, Mary Jane, pot, reefers, ganja, joint and grass) for prescribed medical purposes (so called “medical marijuana”). Advocacy groups claim that smoking cannabis is a safe and effective treatment for various psychological and medical conditions, ranging from stress and anxiety to Alzheimer’s dementia and Parkinson’s disease, even though cannabis is not approved for such use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Legalization of cannabis is the process of removing all legal prohibitions against it. Cannabis would then be available to the adult general population for purchase 90 | 109:2 |

According to McGuinness (2009), “Mood and cognitive effects of marijuana include exacerbation of depression and anxiety (including panic attacks), as well as memory problems that may persist for a month after last use” (p. 19). The facts surrounding the negative impact of smoking marijuana should be enough for anyone to not smoke the drug. Unfortunately people ignore the warnings about the negative impact mariujana has on the body. The warnings about marijuana use are most likely ignored because people, especially teens have not personally witnessed anyone suffer from the affects of marijuana addiction.
