Case Discussion: McDonald’s McDonald’s is among the most popular brands in the world today. Its popularity and exponential growth are a result of various factors, namely attention to detail, relationship management, innovation and efficiency. For example, the product that is synonymous with the name of the company - french fries - gave McDonald’s an “identity and exclusiveness” that remains till today. Although it may appear as a simple product, french fries are the result of significant research and experimentation on the part of McDonald to determine the perfect ingredients so as to produce the fries consistently. This ranged from optimizing temperature readings to monitoring starch content in the potatoes purchased. Other successful and hugely popular product innovations included Chicken McNuggets and the Egg McMuffin. These examples demonstrate the ability of the company to continually innovate and create new products for its evolving clientele. Some products, such as the fat-free burger and pizza, were not as successful as the others, yet it demonstrated McDonald’s innovative spirit to continually provide more choices to its customers. In addition to product innovations, McDonald’s has excelled in the area of process innovation. The company is an industry leader and rival to many companies, from medium sized businesses to conglomerates, in terms of fast service, productivity of employees and ability to maintain consistency in its products. However, the company’s greatest process innovation remains to be seen elsewhere – its supply chain. As a growing company in the mid 1900’s, the company believed in establishing sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships with its suppliers and franchises, such that they grew with the company.
