Central Idea: The three steps involved in eating a mango are preparing, consuming and cleaning up afterward. Introduction: Have you ever felt awkward when faced with eating something you are not familiar with? Like an artichoke or escargot? Today I will tell you how to properly eat a mango. I spent a summer in Hawaii working in a restaurant that served exotic fruits like mangos and papayas. By the end of this speech, you will know how to prepare and eat a mango, and even be able to clean up afterwards! Transition: (Let’s begin with the first step) I. First, you must prepare the mango for consumption. A. It is important to choose a nice, plump mango from your grocery store. 1. The best mango has a very red skin. 2. The ripest mango is slightly soft. B. Rinse the mango thoroughly to make sure it is clean. 1. Use cool water when rinsing. 2. Use a damp cloth to remove any excess dirt on the skin. C. Peel the mango with a clean, sharp knife. 1. The best knife to use in peeling fruit is a small, flexible knife. 2. Rinse the knife off with cool water between peelings. Transition: (Now that I have informed you about preparing the mango, let’s talk about how to eat it.) II. The second step is consuming the mango. A. To eat the mango, break off pieces one at a time. 1. Make sure there is no leftover seed on the bites before consumption. 2. Make sure there is no leftover skin on the bites before consumption. B.
