The classical historian, Suetonius, writes of how Nero’s grandfather loved the brutal performances of the gladiators so much that Augustus had him rebuked and how his father was known for his quick temper and violent nature. These negative characteristics would definitely have an impact on the young emperor, as these figures are his role models. Whether Nero started the Fire of Rome or not is still argued about today. Most historic texts like that of Suetonius accuse him of the disaster. However, Tacitus
Achilles vs. Agamemnon In the epic poem, The Iliad, Homer describes the social collision of Achilles and Agamemnon who fight over pride and anger. While both men are prominent figures in the poem only one man is justified in his actions. Achilles has the vindicated point of view because he is the greater warrior. He thrived in every area for success and succeeded his great reputation every chance. He fought nobly in all battles and believed in tradition when called upon.
If the state found someone incapable of military duty for some reason, or they did not take well to the military lifestyle then they would be stripped of citizenship and labeled a “trembler” for their fear of battle. This was a great shame to be guilty of and therefore the Spartan culture had lots of pressure for young men to grow up enjoying the thrill of battle. This had a much greater impact than ensuring job satisfaction to all the Spartiates. The Spartans knew that the key to a successful army, especially an army that operated in a style such as the phalanx needed to have strong men who would not give in. If any man proved to be a weak point in the wall of shields then the entire phalanx was in grave danger.
His cockiness of being so “strong, swift, and godlike” (Norton’s page 110) results from many reasons. Achilles’ evident strength makes him the most fierce and best fighter of the Greek army. Showing Achilles feels he is so good, the Greek army with be nothing without him, he swears by his scepter to Agamemnon, “When every last Greek desperately misses Achilles, your remorse won’t do any good then, when Hector the man-killer swats you down like flies, and you will your heart out because you have failed to honor the best Greek of all.” (Norton’s page 113) As mentioned, Achilles holds a scepter made from the mountains of Olympus. It is said, “A scepter-holding king has honor beyond the rest of men, power and glory given by Zeus himself.” (Norton’s page 114) The greatest factor of all which allows Achilles to have such a high conception of his position is how he is linked to the gods. Although Achilles’ father, Peleus, is a mortal, his mother is not.
Hector and Achilles are both excellent warriors; however they both fight for very different reasons. Achilles has menis, which means that he has a great deal of killing force. This superiority over all of his peers in battle translates into social statues and honor through respect. Through his accomplishments in battle, Achilles receives the Trojan girl Briseis which is a token of honor. (Homer).
Julius Caesar at one point and time in history was the dictator of Rome. Caesar was a power hungry man who wanted to have complete control of Rome. In addition to being power hungry, Julius was a man who had the people believing that he actually cared about the well being of Rome and what was best for it, but he truly did not care about Rome. All he cared about was himself and the image of how people preserved him. He was also an arrogant man who was very full of himself.
Throughout The
Iliad, Achilles went through some significant changes that affected himself, as well as the
Achaeans and Trojans. He began a hero and ended a tragic hero.
The Trojan War is vital to Greek mythology and provides a backdrop for
discussion. Before the war even started, however, it was known by all Trojans and
Achaeans that Achilles was the best fighter. He was the hero of all fighters.
Although, they both were raised as warriors, they each had different personalities. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh was an abusive leader, who loved war because he loved the thought of being powerful and was selfish king that wanted to live forever. Gilgamesh’s major concern is obtaining eternal life because he realized that even though he’s powerful among his people, one day he too will fall victim to death. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, He did not pay attention to his people and was always concerned with conquering other city-states. Meanwhile, Arjuna was
Does Achilles emerge as a sympathetic character? Why or why not? Achilles is a Greek warrior who fights in the Trojan War. He is respected and revered as a hero among all of the Greek people and he is the most important character in the Iliad. Achilles is an unbelievable warrior who doesn’t get the thanks he deserves.
In ancient Greece, a hero was described as a person who would fight hard and die hard. Many people would describe Odysseus as a selfish and cocky person who didn’t really care about his crew and what they have gone through to help him. Though in my opinion, Odysseus and his men are all heroes because they all are fighting their hardest. Odysseus starts out with his act of heroism when he is fighting on troy with all of his men. Odysseus had a plan to get in and get out.
