LOST Ash. The powdery substance left over from combustion. That's all that remains at Malachor V. I remember that day as if it were yesterday, how could I not... the day I became a monster. Malachor V was an agricultural world, one of many supplying food and other commodities to other human-colonised planets spread across the galaxy. The only habitable planet of six in the Malachor system, it was a rare find - perfect atmosphere, fertile soil and warm climate. It existed peacefully - until the war. The planets were controlled by the Covenant - a combination of all the individual planetary governments to form a single predominant force. But some weren't happy with this system. There were insurrectionist movements on different planets from time to time but they always died down or were silenced by the Covenant military forces before things got out of hand. On impact there was a brilliant flash of white-red light and the planet's surface boiled. Light as bright as a star flashed out and everything it touched was vaporised. Millions of lives snuffed out in an instant. The ships continued the orbital bombardment until every square centimetre of the surface was covered in glowing molten material. Malachor V was no more. I returned later, after the war, to witness the destruction I had caused first hand. Everything that hadn't been destroyed was covered in black ash. And then there were the people. Millions of people had died that day but i never imagined this. They were frozen in the last positions they had been in - running in terror. They weren’t people anymore - they had turned to ash, monuments to the horror of war. I think every day about all the lives that i ended that day, I destroyed a planet and everything on it - that can never be justified or forgiven. I often wonder - what could I have done
