Love and Basketball is a romantic flick originally released in 2000. It follows the development of Monica Wright and Quincy McCall, played by actors Sanaa Latham and Omar Epps, from elementary school until they ultimately wed following a five year separation after college. Monica and her family moved to Los Angeles, California from Atlanta, Georgia, next door to Quincy and his parents. Monica loved basketball and aspired to be the first woman in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Monica’s father was an accountant at a bank who supported his daughter’s aspirations. He attended all of her basketball games. Monica’s mother was a stay at home mom. She had one older sister, Lena. Quincy’s father was a retired National Basketball Association (NBA) player. During the early periods of Quincy’s life, his father was on the road the majority of the time playing basketball. His mother was a stay at home mom, making Quincy very close to and protective of her. Quincy looked up to his father in every sense, down to wanting to become an NBA player “just like his dad”. He even wanted to wear his father’s jersey number. On one occasion, Quincy was home with his mom working on a homework assignment. His father came home and began to process with Quincy the difficulties he was having with the assignment. Quincy told his father he “can’t” do the assignment. His father responded by reaffirming him that “can’t should never be in a man’s vocabulary because if he can’t, he’s not a man”. This was a statement that followed Quincy throughout his life. He lived by this creed. On move in day, Monica noticed Quincy and his friends playing basketball at his home. She went over to his home with a baseball cap on to ask if she could play with them. They said that she could, assuming that she was a boy. When she took her cap off and prepared to play, she was ridiculed by the
