The major questions today are “does liberal arts education better prepare you for a career than a regular institution?” or “is liberal arts education a negative because it makes you learn about more than just what you’re doing in the future?” Liberal arts education is not only good for your career but also for you as a person and knowing more than just what you’re going to get paid for. Liberal arts education provides you with the basic skills needed to be a successful critical thinker. “During the Renaissance, the term was interpreted more broadly to mean all of those studies that impart a general, as opposed to be vocational or specialized education. These correspond rather closely to the interpretation used in most undergraduate colleges today, although the curriculum of the latter is more flexible than that of the Renaissance University.” (The Columbia Encyclopedia). What I got from this piece was that when it comes to liberal arts education there is many sub categories.
The first reason is because a lot of people want a job that will pay very good money. By going to college, you will have the hands-on learning education you need to start your chosen career. This is a huge reason why a lot of careers require you to have at least a two or four year degree. Another reason why college matters is because it helps students boost their confidence level out in the real world. There are countless things that people have to do every single day in life so going college will help give you a better idea of what the definition of life really is.
Once this reluctance is overcome our society will improve dramatically. It is a proven truth that the betterment and improvement of any social system depends upon the depth of the relationship which its individuals enjoy. Moreover, educating students about diverse cultures can help them understand their own culture in a better manner. Contrasting their own trends and ideas with others, is a very good way of understanding that what is better and why. The juvenile minds will not only learn about other cultures, but will also get closer to their own culture.
The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice. 2. The strength of these philosophies lies in the fact they are all student centered approaches to teaching and learning. I most appreciate the prescriptive nature of the philosophies meaning that they all are attempting to increase learning and decrease behavior issues by establishing roles, routines, and norms of a classroom. I think if I can actively utilize the approaches above, I can create the type of environment that is helpful to both students and still be a place I want to work in. I do not expect that I can do it all the first year, but maybe over time I can bring in more research based applications of classroom management.
