What will legalization do to the home of America ? The Purpose Recently on the news I witnessed a shooting at a rally for legalization of marijuana in Denver, Colorado. After that I realized that this is a bigger social issue then I was originally aware of. While researching this topic I wish to understand both sides of the story for legalization of marijuana. I would also like to know the effects if this drug was legal throughout America. My goal by the end of this project is to have picked a side in which I agree with. Either I will be supporting legalization of marijuana or I will be denying this notion. For my creative project I would like for it to show a more visual representation of this social issue. Around 160 million Americans vote for legalization of marijuana. How much of those Americans are honestly aware of all the causes and effects of legalizing this drug. What divides those that vote? Race, nationality, religion, average income, there is plenty of possibilities to group these voters. Research shows that smoking can lead to “a smokers cough” can obstruct airways. Also proved to higher the risk of lung infection. While research proves that it can cause some bad health risks, it isn’t proved to cause any mental issues. Marijuana does not show any increase in cancer. Even Thomas Jefferson even said “Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country” (http://www.hemppresidents.com/pot-and-hemp-quotes.htm) while currently marijuana is only legal for medical use in certain states. Marijuana treats those with migraines, relieve symptoms of chronic disease, prevents seizures, etc. Also the ‘American Association of Cancer Research has proved that marijuana slows the growth of tumors. The widespread of marijuana in America its hard to estimate the amount illegally in America. The Process Starting off I simply looked up “major social issues in America” which showed a list of current events and problems. I have an interest in people with strong opinions so I picked the topic of legalization of marijuana. Not only did I pick it because of the strong opinions facing this issue, but also the recent shooting at a marijuana rally in Colorado. My topic did not change throughout my research.
