Summary and Practical Application of Larry Crabb’s method of effective Christian Counseling Ronald Ruben Liberty University November 1, 2014 Abstract This paper explores Larry Crabb’s methodology of Christian Counseling. It provides a brief summary on the techniques used and how this contributes to the discipline of counseling. PRACTICAL APPLICATION 1. Give practical application to Dr. Crabb’s material as relates to the utility for the overall discipline of counseling and the specific potential influence upon your life and ministry. Dr. Crabb’s theory is one that can be of great use to my life and ministry. First, the author gives great information on developing an effective approach to counseling others in a time of need. He makes a wonderful point in establishing the fact that this is not a one size fits all field, but one that should be tailored to your client. Furthermore, the fact that the author covers many of the material that would be found in psychology class, but with spiritual twist, is valuable to me. The material is one that can be applied, not only as a clinical psychologist, but in my one-on-one pastoral counseling sessions with members as well. However, I believe the greatest influence Crabb has provided is in helping establish a counseling program in a local church. The various levels and information provided in invaluable. The point that stuck the most is the notion that counseling in a local church requires a licensed psychologist, but also needs the support of lay members as well.
