The tree in A Separate Peace is very symbolic to the story. This symbol is successful because it represents a fraternity between the members of the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. The tree affects the story of A Separate Peace by showing Gene and Finny’s friendship and jealousy for each other. The tree also adds to one of the themes of the story, loss of innocence. In A Separate Peace the tree is very successful symbol because it forms a kind of fraternity, between the members of the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. It forms this brotherhood because every night over the summer session the boys would go and jump out of the tree into the Devon River. This fraternity brings Gene and Finny together but also brings them apart at one point in the story. For example one night when Finny is going out to the tree he tries to bring Gene, but Gene refuses because he wants to study for his test the next morning. Gene and Finny become close friends after jumping out of the tree for there first time, because when they were climbing out on the branch Gene fell but Finny was there to catch him and save his life. Gene being jealous of Fanny’s athletic abilities, jostled the branch while they were both on the limb, and Finny fell and brook his leg when he hit the ground. The tree supports the Theme of, loss of innocence’s, the tree supports this because when finny falls and breaks his leg he realizes that he will never be able to join the army. So in turn he destroys the thought of their even being a possibility of there being a war. It helps destroy Gene’s innocence’s because Gene caused Finny to fall out of the tree by jostling the branch. He does this because of his jealousy towards Finny, this helps Gene lose his innocence because Gene pretty much kills Finny.
