Year 11 Advanced English Quality of Relationships in Society Many authors have tried to illustrate the quality of relationships in society within their texts. This is clearly seen in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” and the 1989 movie “Batman” directed by Tim Burton. Jekyll and Hyde was created during the 1800s in an era where police had little or no control over criminals and justice was usually enforced by higher middleclass citizens. This is seen throughout the text many times. For example, when the girl is trampled by Hyde, his punishment is decided by Mr Enfield and a Doctor, who are both well respected members of society. Also after Carew is beaten to death by Hyde, it is the police who come to Utterson for help and understanding about the case. This shows us the relationship of society where the more wealth and education you have the more powerful you are. This aspect of relationships in society is one that has not really changed over time. Similarly in ‘Batman’ the police have trouble bringing criminals to justice because of the influence powerful mob bosses have in society. For example, when Grissom orders Lieutenant Eckhart to kill Jack Napier, which he tries to carry out against orders by Commissioner Gordon. This association between police and citizens is an unhealthy relationship as it is not about justice, equity and equality but more about greed, power and manipulation. Another unhealthy relationship is that of the Joker and his Henchmen. The Joker has no care for anyone else but himself and looks down on his henchmen. For example when the Joker has his balloons stolen by Batman he without warning kills Bob, his right hand man, who had saved his live several times before. This type of relationship can also be seen in Jekyll and Hyde where due to Hyde’s mistreatment of his maid sees her almost
