Is Animal Testing Moral and Ethical? Ashford University PHI208: Ethics and Moral Reasoning November 22, 2014 Is Animal Testing Moral and Ethical? For my final paper I chose to take on the topic of responsibility to animals and to answer the question, is it ethical to harm or kill animals for purposes such as scientific research. The reasons I chose to focus on this topic are my love for animals and because while I lived in England I worked at Huntingdon Life Sciences in the accounting department. I learned first-hand through the invoices I processed what tests were done on different animals. I also, had the disadvantage of hearing the animal cries through the open window, which was heart wrenching. I only worked there for two months, but it was a very long two months and it is not something that I would ever want to experience. Throughout the years science has used animals of all sorts of their test subjects, ranging from the common field mice to a chimpanzee. How is it that we think it is morally and ethically correct to cause pain and suffering to those animals? This paper will show you both the positive and negative aspects of animal research and how in the end it benefits humans. It will also show you how there are many people who think that there are other ways to research the new medicines and products for humans. How is the scientific research done on animals accomplished and how can they be improved, this paper should answer that question and hopefully open the eyes to those who do not have any moral misgivings about animal research. Another issue that pertains to animal testing is how the animals are treated while in the care of the research facilities and lastly, what is done with those animals when the testing is complete. Is there any way that research can be conducted on animals in a moral and ethical way or is there no way
