Dog Owner vs. Compelling Advocate After reading “Letter from an Irate Dog Owner” and Al Knight's article”Perhaps We Should Move To Save Dogs From Their Owners” which argue opposing sides on whether a law should be passed to prohibit pickup owners from driving down major highways in Colorado with dogs in their truck beds. I feel that Al Knight's article which argues the law should be passed is a much more effective argument than that of the Irate Dog Owner who is against the law being passed. Both Al Knight and the Irate Dog Owner give reasons why their argument is correct but, the manner they use to get their point across is very different. Knights style of writing is formal, informative, and, stays in third person throughout his article.…show more content…
I feel that Knight's argument is very effective because of his solid reason and supporting evidence he uses to back up his argument. Instead of writing his opinion he uses facts to back up why it's not safe for dogs to ride loose in truck beds. He uses things said by well-known organizations like the Humane Society and SPCA. For example, Knight takes an excerpt from an article where the Humane Society speaks about the dangers of a dog in a truck bed and how a bump or hitting the brakes too hard can cause the dog to be thrown out of the truck bed. It could even result in car accidents when people swerve to avoid hitting the injured dog. The excerpt shows how easily a dog can be in injured and backs up his reason for passing the law. In addition he gives examples of other states and the laws they have put up to for the protection of the animals and what type of law could be passed in order for it to be enforced. I feel that his argument proves to be highly effective. I believe that Al Knight's argument is much more effective than the Irate Dog Owner. Knight's reason is not only more solid but is also backed up with a lot of evidence to conclude that the law for Colorado pickup owners benefits their dogs. Unlike Knight the Irate Dog Owner who expresses in his letter that simply for his own personal reasons he is against the law. So I conclude that Knight's article “Perhaps We Should Move to Save Dogs From Their Owners” proves to be the more effective argument of the
