The reflection story I choose is called Why I Hunt: A Predators Meditation by Rick Bass. The short story tells of Bass’s love of hunting for both elk and deer. However, the significance of the story goes far beyond merely killing an animal for its meat, as it tells mostly of the emotional struggle he feels as a hunter. Bass acknowledges the fact that he is a predator but wonders if his insatiable need for meat will somehow affect him in a later life. He questions whether or not he will have to pay for all of the innocent animals’ deaths that he has caused.
Because he was blind to the prophecy, he blinds himself to remember everything he had done. His fate would have been execution, but by punishing himself, he makes other believe that he is punished. In addition to Oedipus avoiding his fate he is a coward in terms of his actions. He tells Creon to exile him far away because he is too afraid to deal with all that has happed. Quentin carries around a suitcase stuffed with books wherever he goes and finds excuses to get out of gym class. He is excitable and often confounds the other members and townspeople with his advanced vocabulary when jumpy. Jimmy "O'Dell" Carroll: is small and excitable, the most emotional member of the group. His father drove the town garbage truck, allowing O'Dell access to many useful items, frequently scrounged to further the group's efforts. He is always scheming ways of making money, from the failed iron scrap attempt—which took an entire summer, yielded a net loss of one dollar, not counting the destruction of borrowed equipment, and almost killed Sonny—to the profitable harvesting of ginseng.
McCandless believes that his parents are fake. They really represent what Chris hates about society. One of the reasons he was so mad at them and despised them so much was that he had found that his dad had a wife before his mother. And that his dad had also had kids with that wife. He figures this out when visiting his old home in California.
This also explains why his own son left him there. Throughout this story the character Koskoosh thoughts are revealed to us. One of those thoughts was him talking about how nature does not care about anything about the flesh just the species. Another thought in the story is him remembering the time when he watched a herd of wolves attack an old moose. This moose was a lot like Koskoosh because it was too old to keep up with its tribe as well.
If Jack and his hunters would have been taking care of all of their responsibilities instead of just hunting all day, if they would have just been watching the fire they could have gotten off the island before anybody could get hurt, before it was a game of life and death. There is so much more conflict with Biff and his father because Wily wants to mold his son Biff into a success that he thinks the American Dream holds for him. Although his tries throughout this molding he fails. Another reason why there was so much conflict was because Biff caught him cheating on his mom.
