The frontier definitely moved at a different pace since they had horses and canoes versus cars, ships, planes, etc. Just think about how the Indian trails turned into roads, the roads then turned into turnpikes, then the railroads, etc. Improvements are always being made by each new generation, although, people may not realize the significance of our past history it is definitely a huge part of our present history. We need to understand the different stages of colonial life that brought about our development and advancement. From fur trading, farming, mines, and ranch life, each of these were very important and had a major influence on our economic and political history.
A People’s History of the United States: Reflection Chapter 8 We Take Nothing by Conquest, Thank God This chapter gives a summary of the events that centered around America’s newfound greed for land. It details James J. Polk’s leadership as president of a nation that was quickly expanding, yet expanding at a cost. President Polk wants to annex Texas and, in general, gain more land, but he does so without concern for the native people already living there. Zinn gives a quote from the diary of Colonel Ethan Allen Hitchcock, who opposed measures taken by General Taylor (under Polk) to annex Texas. Hitchcock explains, “He seems to have lost all respect for Mexican rights and is willing to be an instrument of Mr. Polk for pushing our boundary as far west as possible,” (Zinn 150).
Chapter 16 The Conquest of the Far West Pioneers such as farmers, ranchers, and miners settled west around 1845 and recreated the image of “The Great American Desert” to a legendary “Frontier.” Many Americans were in the west before the Civil War. Despite efforts to drive away established native populations, the Anglo-Americans found themselves among them with their influence in everything they did. Pioneers really relied on federal money and the capitalism of the East. The Far West or “Great West” was more than just one region beyond the Mississippi River; it was filled with many people and different environments. The most widespread Indian group of the West was the Plains Indians.
[pic] The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, is celebrated on the 5th of May, which commemorates the victory of the Mexican military over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in United States cities with a significant Mexican population. The battle at Puebla in 1862 had happened at a very violent and chaotic time in Mexico's history. Mexico had finally gained independence from Spain in 1821 after a difficult and bloody struggle, and a number of internal political takeovers and wars, including the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the Mexican Civil War of 1858, which had ruined the national economy.During this period of struggle, Mexico had accumulated heavy debts to several nations, including Spain, England and France, who were demanding repayment. When Mexico had finally stopped making any loan payments, France had took action on its own to install Napoleon III's relative, Archduke Maximilian of Austria, as ruler of Mexico. The french army were marching on toward Mexico City, when they had encountered a strong resistance near Puebla at the Mexican forts of Loreto and Guadalupe.
(Old and Sold) “The battle of Pultowa is one of the most famous battles in the world’s history. Charles and Peter, at that time the battle was fought, were the greatest rulers and warriors of the day, and the long and bitter struggle between them had been watched by all Europe”. (Old and Sold) Peter won the battle and with that he was able to accomplish a lot. “He was able to expand the territory of Russia and trade with it. He also introduced Russia to western culture.” (Boris Schorschoff) Although, even when Peter had finally started taking over Sweden, Turkey was left to take over.
As white colonists began to spread their influence across the continent, it was inevitable that they would run into the expanding Spanish empire to the south. The first major conflict was in Texas. The United States won the battle, and as a result, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. In it, Mexico ceded much of its territory in the Southwest to the United States. The transfer was complete in 1853 with the Gadsden Purchase.
Re-viewing the Past Response to The Alamo A. )In the article, written about two films based on the historical event called “The Alamo,” the author describes the historical inaccuracies put in those films by the directors, and alludes to why they might have added these inaccuracies. For the most part, the movies themselves were accurate because they both established the main cause for the battle of the Alamo. The movies established once Mexico had secured its independence from Spain it became a dictatorship under the leadership of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This transition caused American settler's living in Texas to seize several of Santa Anna's garrisons, including the Alamo.
Generally speaking, researchers have gathered enough information for writers like Kreyche, to report on this expedition as well as many more that have taken place through the years. One point Kreyche made was that he thought Lewis and Clark were heroes for discovering new lands. Yes, what they did was very great for our country but I would not consider them heroes. Lewis and Clark were really trying to explore the lands and find unsettled territory. When they were traveling along the Missouri River, it stated that they would stop and mingle with Indian tribes.
During the Texas Revolution, there was a number of battles that took place over the years.
