Inequalities in Education

Do Americans know about the inequalities in education? Yes, I believe most of us know and are acutely aware of such happenings. Depending on the class of any given American (wealthy, middle class, poor) they could have experienced such inequalities first hand. For others, we have heard about it through social media, such as the news or different legislation. Is it right that certain children are prioritized over others in regards to school supplies, and other educational advantages? No, it isn’t, but that is the way things are. Many people believe that the vast difference in the quality of American education is something that needs to be fixed. I agree with these people, but I do not think that by redistributing the wealth we will fix all of America. In my opinion, if we redistribute the wealth, or charge higher taxes to those who are wealthy we will discourage young people to want to work towards becoming wealthy just to have it taken away. What I mean by this is, if you are given everything it becomes less valuable, but if you have to work hard for everything, it becomes invaluable. I believe the same notion applies in education. Yes, all schools should be given the same base funding, and supplies. The educational system needs to stop focusing on test scores, and more on creative thinking and problem solving. I believe that formula alone will save the American educational system. While I was listening to Jonathan Kozol speak about the poverty and segregation of these inner city schools, and I just had to disagree on the subject of the schools being segregated. Kozol spoke about how out of the eleven thousand students in a certain area there were only twenty six white students, and because of the low number of white students attending this district that the school must be segregated. Just because a low number of a certain race of students attend these schools
