Industrialized Hemp: Economic, Environmental Potential and Prohibition of an Industrial Product.... .. .. Legalizing hemp for industrial purposes in the United States will help stimulate the economy and save the environment. The benefits and uses of industrialized hemp have so many environmental and economic potentials as a non drug agricultural commodity, that reasons for prohibition are unreasonable and lack substance. The U.S. government understands that hemp is not a drug. Hemp has many environmental benefits and the government claims to be implementing environmental awareness and preservation. Our economy has been in a recession that has affected our farmers who could be growing hemp for some extra income. The U.S. government is forcing…show more content…
Cannabis contains unique molecules called cannabinoids, which are mostly either THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidiol). THC causes the mind altering affects, but CBD actually blocks the effects of THC (West, 8). Hemp plants contain high levels of CBD and marijuana plants contain high levels of THC. Therefore, not only is the hemp variety of the Cannabis sativa not able to be used as a drug, it also has quite the opposite effect, to the extent that it would prohibit the mind-altering effects of marijuana. It is the ultimate anti-marijuana plant, yet gets confused and grouped in with marijuana. Exports of industrialized hemp are increasing with an increase in elimination of prohibition. Almost 60% of Canada’s exports of industrialized hemp go straight to U.S. to be used for manufacture of goods made from hemp products. The U.S. happens to be the only industrialized nation that has a ban on hemp cultivation. Another point brought up by the government about legalizing hemp, is that there is an unsure profitability future for industrialized hemp. Profitability should not be a factor when deciding that an industry should be prohibited. There is not much research done on the growth and uses of hemp because the DEA makes it very difficult to obtain a permit, even for research purposes. Studies outside the U.S. show that the hemp industry is growing, and that there is a market. Hemp can be a very valuable alternative crop for farmers struggling with crop production and market recession.
