Tej Kulkarni June 13,2011 Cotton vs. Hemp Cotton is a soft, fluffy, fibre that grows in a ball on cotton plants. The plant is grown mainly in the Americas, Africa, India, and Pakistan. Cotton fibres are usually spun into yarn and used to create cloth which is now the most used natural fibre cloth in the world today. However the problem with standard cotton is that there are so many chemicals and pesticides used on the plants and the plantation use up tremendous amounts of water. We all love the feel of fresh cotton sheets on the bed and light cotton clothes in the summer, but at what price to the environment does our cotton come, and what more environmentally friendly product can replace it. Hemp could be an easy more efficient and more environmentally friendly alternative to cotton. For hundreds of years hemp was used to make various commercial products like paper, rope, canvas and textiles. Many years ago hemp was unjustly banned. However, hemp has recently been rediscovered as a plant that has enormous environmental, economic, and commercial potential. The major problems with cotton are that the plantations require a lot of herbicides and pesticides, they use a lot fertilizer and they use up massive quantities of water. Hemp however makes a stronger material than cotton that can be grown in several different climates, requires no herbicides or pesticides, needs no fertilizers and would consume a lot less water. Because hemp is more durable then cotton I would throw away less cloths and I would reduce my methane as well as my nitrogen emissions. Each year millions of people around the world go out and buy new cotton textiles. The truth is that in Canada we can afford to buy cotton cloths without thinking about the consequences that it will have on our planet. If we really want to make a change the federal government could place a tax on different products that create certain amount of pollution and contribute the money to environmental efforts around the world. For example it creates a lot of pollution to produce meat, so if the government were to impose a tax then there would be an extra “pollution tax” on the meat. Government involvement could be necessary to help slow down industries like the cotton industry and the livestock
