Realizing an importance of an indigenous culture and people that formed a former state from which today’s state descended may contribute to the understanding of the place and importance of Udins for Azerbaijan. It was one of the 26 tribes that formed the Caucasian- Albanian state located in contemporary area of the Azerbaijan Republic in the 4th century BC. Similar to the other 25 tribes, Udin tribe is one branch of the Old Sak Turkish Tribe (Mustafayev, 2011). Moreover, some scholars speculate their roots reaching to Alps, but lack of historical, cultural, and archaeological evidence undermines such view. On the other hand, contemporary available resources, currently practiced traditions, cuisine, garments, religious and moral values bolster the accuracy of their origin from Turkish Tribes.…show more content…
After Herodotus, Roman geographer Claudius Ptolemy also mentioned Udins in his works; however, the most elaborate depiction of the Udi people is present in Musa Kalankatulu’s “Albanian History” (KP, 2016a). He was Udin by himself and lived in the 7th century. These indigenous people firmly believe that Nij area, now located in Gabala, Azerbaijan, is the place they were born from the very existence of this culture and ethnic group; therefore, their strong bones with their motherland may explain the reason why Udins stayed in Nij during the times of religious oppression by Arabic Islamic
