Impact of religious encounters on families in early modern period In what ways did Sati, Buddhism, and Christianity family encounters impact world history in the early modern period (1400-1800)? In research paper, Sati, Buddhism and Christianity primary sources will be examined and topic of importance of family in regarding each of these religions and how they influenced the history will be discussed. Sati Sati isn’t a religion itself but a practice of Hinduism. However, practice of Sati is very viable in history of Hinduism as far as family goes. Sati is a practice of a widow throwing herself onto her husband’s funeral pyre or she shaves her head, throw away her jewelry, wears a smile white sari and cannot partake in any kind of celebration. Once a woman become a widow, her main source of income, well being, and a protector is gone, therefore it is encouraged for a widow to completely isolate herself or burn herself along with husband’s funeral pyre, This is done in order to protect herself from committing in any sexual relationships, and also to protect honor of her deceased husband and his family. This practice was widely practiced in many places such as central Asia, South, and Southeast Asia, and Fiji. In Hinduism, once a woman is married, her family means everything. Serving her family and husband becomes her lifetime goal. She must protect her husband and his family honor at all cost and that is why Sati became a big part of Hinduism. It was believed that when a woman chooses to sacrifice herself, she remains pure and also becomes a goddess. She will also bring fortune to her birth and marital families. Their cremation site was also marked by a commemorative stone or temple and became pilgrimage site. Many people would go there to seek divine favors.
