IMPACT OF A METEORITE! 1) If a meteorite of a substantial size was to hit the earth, it would have a disastrous effect on the planet. A major effect that the meteorite would have on earth is, the loss of many plant and animal species. 2) If a meteor was to enter the earth’s atmosphere it would send a shock wave in the air, while the meteor is travelling through the air its friction causes the temperature to dramatically increase, making it glow and change to a hot red colour. Once the meteor hits the earth, ash and dirt particles would be thrown into the air, causing global darkness. The rest of the meteorite is thrown in the air, causing a global firestorm. As a result, smoke, dirt, dust and ash that is in the atmosphere, reduces the sunlight that reaches the earth, causing a temperature drop. This causes huge waves, killing land, and many living things. 3) A global firestorm is a superior reaction of a meteorite crash, which could cause an extinction of many living species. Sixty-five million years ago, a ten kilometer meteorite, struck the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, which caused a global firestorm. People argue, whether or not, the global firestorm is what caused the dinosaurs to extinction. (2) When a meteorite crashes, dust, air and hot portions of the crashed meteorite are dispensed into the atmosphere. The hot portions of the crashed meteorite land onto the earth’s surface which cause fires. When a huge meteorite crashes in to the earth, it causes so much harm, that it destroys the land and all living things that surround it. As it harms the land, it kills the homes, food and water and plant supply of animals, therefore leading them to death. 3) At this present stage, if a massive meteorite was to crash on earth, our lives, as we know them, would totally change. Reactions that would happen if a meteorite was to hit the earth are:
