Immigration is what makes America, America. There are many different nationalities living in the United States today, we all have ancestors that have migrated here from all over the globe. There are many ways one can become a legal United States citizen; however, there are over 11 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States today that have not followed the proper procedures to becoming legal residents. Even though immigrants should be allowed equal rights in America, too many will be dependent on government assistance or will not be able contribute to taxes because of limited job availability Illegal immigration can be defined in many ways; however, it is mostly defined as the act of living in a country without government permission or disobeying that country’s immigration laws. There are many pros and cons to illegal immigrants living in the United States; however, it is a national issue that has to be taken control of.
Discrimination Against Immigrants It is extremely difficult for immigrants to thrive in any foreign country, especially if their immigration status is an illegal one. The widespread perception that people commonly have about immigrants is that they are intruders who only arrived to any given country to take away that country’s native individual’s employment opportunities, to live on government benefits or to commit crimes. This is based on the fact that when people decide to leave their native countries, it is usually because they are looking for a better life than the one they had back in their place of origin and because of this they may accept jobs and work under conditions that others would not accept, and for example, they may work for lesser wages and without any kind of employee benefits. However, it is usually extremely difficult for immigrants to find jobs either due to the language barrier or because of their illegal alien status; therefore, they end up receiving countless government benefits, which end up being paid for by the common citizen in the form of taxes. Furthermore, some people see immigrants as gang members or even as guerrilla and cartel members who are used to lead a life of crime back at their countries of origin.
Research suggests that ‘’a vast majority of arriving immigrants come to the U.S. because they believe that this country is the source of prosperity’’. This essay will discuss the pro and cons on why people immigrate to the U.S by looking at job opportunities, family, economics and education. Immigration can be defined as the movement of people from their place of origin to a distant land know or unknown to them in quest of “greener pasture’’. Out of immigration rates, the rate at which people immigrate to the United States is alarming. It is the wish of every one young or old to immigrate to the United States.
Employers knowingly employ hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants each year on farms, in restaurants, as domestic help, and in labor-intensive jobs. Without these workers some industries could not survive. Undocumented workers fill a need in this country and will work for wages that most Americans will not (“Employment protection policies and the undocumented worker: a balancing of competing interests,” 2005). Conclusion In conclusion, our current immigration laws are tearing families apart. Immigration reform is needed, but there is not a one size fits all solution.
Most of the things these immigrants do in the U.S. is illegal; avoid taxes, work illegally, live illegally, etc. The biggest problem with them is that a majority of them do not pay taxes. Households with an illegal immigrant as the head of the house only pay 1/3 of the federal taxes, or ¼ as much as a legal household. The debt that illegal immigrants cause to the economy is far greater than the good they do. As Steven A. Camarota tells in The High Cost of Cheap Labor: Illegal Immigration and the Federal Budget, “Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes.
In order to concentrate on the good that immigration offers we have to defunct the negativity that many associate with immigration. Unauthorized immigrants use public support programs like welfare, unemployment insurance, and food stamps. NO. Unauthorized immigrants themselves by and large are ineligible for such programs because of their immigration status. Immigrants take jobs away from American workers.
These areas affect American's standard of living which can cause great concern and discussion. Many Americans argue that illegal immigrants are taking all of their jobs leaving many unemployed. The United States is getting desperate; they have already fallen short of recruiting goals which is raising the need for more people to join the military. Hence the military has eliminated almost all of the prior requirements to join. Don’t have a high school diploma… that is fine, a person does not even have to be an American citizen. That is correct the United States military is taking in illegals, the same people (United States government) who say that they are trying to deport and prevent illegals from being in America is doing the exact opposite it’s total hypocrisy. So what are people suppose to believe that illegal residents are taking jobs that American’s want?
The truth is that we have added so many more border patrol agents to protect our borders all around the United States and still illegal immigrants continue to get into our country. Most of them just want to come to the United States and work some just want to raise enough money to take back home to build their own home and provide a better life for their families. We can argue that some crimes are committed by illegal immigrants but the truth is that it’s not just illegal immigrants who are committing crimes and it’s only a small percentage of illegal immigrants who commit these crimes for the simple fact that by being caught will most likely get you a ticket right back into your country that you came from and if you have family out here can cause you to not see them for a very long time. Adding more agents to our borders is not working I do think that it is important to secure our borders from people trying to bring drugs and weapons into this country but trying to
People argue that immigrants occupy the jobs that most natives don’t want but they are actually in competition with each other. The United States is already over saturated with unskilled labor as it is, and it would be unfair to allow illegal aliens to supplant access of employers to legal workers. So supplying the flow of legal workers must be the first priority. The reason so many immigrants work these undesired jobs is because they don’t have much education under their belt. The government is allowing immigrants to enter the country with less than satisfactory education skills.
