IGCSE English Composition :- Impressions of a Fairground As you first approach a fairground, the things that immediately strike you are the number of people, the sheer size of some of the rides and the disorientating atmosphere. A fairground always looks like a place where fun is available, which attracts people to spend time in them. There are often loads of people in a fairground; it’s like struggling to walk in swamp water. People are also constantly moving around, taking their children to a particular ride that they want to have a go on. Lots of the rides are extremely colourful, making them more appealing to try out. If a fairground is open at night then the lights can present it in a stage-like fashion, although sometimes it is a bit blinding. The scale of some of the rides is devastatingly large - especially the roller-coasters - it makes you feel like an ant when you look up at them. The activities are basically a smaller scale for fairground entertainment , with its Whack-a-Mole-like machines and fishing rubber ducks- it reminds you of the slots from gambling halls. The number of rides in a fairground seem nearly countless, everywhere you look there are tall structures with railings above your head and Ferris wheels slowly spinning round- it can really confuse you. Often you will see that there are three or four token dispensers (which are the currency required to pay to go on the rides). The other things that you will doubtless see at a fairground are food stalls, usually selling donuts, hot dogs, burgers, candyfloss and a decent selection of drinks. In addition to seeing the food being cooked and made you will be able to smell them cooking on the grills, making you more tempted to buy one. Another thing you can smell is the oily, mechanical odour that you constantly notice while the rides are running. That, combined with the smell from the food
