The Propaganda Machine History can be a source of great national pride or great national shame, but it is something that everyone should be truthfully familiar with. In “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong”, James Loewen point out that sometimes history can be taught in a way that hides the shame and promotes patriotism. The United States of America has events in its history that some teachers leave out in class, some events that do not paint the United States is a good light. Learning the true history of our past can help our nation prevent making the same mistakes in the future. Many people look to their forefathers for a source of pride.
Math is NOT a Waste of Time Susan Jacoby, a former columnist for the New York Times, raises awareness of scientific and mathematic depravity in the female community in her article “When Bright Girls Decide That Math is ‘a Waste of Time.’” Jacoby believes adolescent girls avoid advanced science and math courses because of stereotypes and “cultural expectations” that society places on women (282). Throughout the article, Jacoby tries to educate parents and women of the lost opportunities girls inflict on themselves so that parents and teachers can decrease the learning gap between boys and girls in the math and science fields. Jacoby believes that parents need to push their daughters to break the barriers and add more science and math classes to their school schedules so that they do not become as “intellectually handicap” as earlier generations. I agree that girls need to continue their education in the math and science fields and that society acts as an influential factor in what classes females take. However, I think the lack of females in advanced science and math classes has no definitive reason.
Mr. Thompson also values courage. To lead an organization takes courage: courage to try new things; courage to make mistakes; courage to admit you don’t know everything; and courage to change knowing that what works today may
He believed in digging deep to find the passion and desire you did not realize you had. He criticized when he needed to and gave praise when there was room. He taught me to never settle for mediocre. Today, I take his leadership and apply it to my everyday life by striving above and beyond what people expect. Life Purpose There use to be a time when I was not sure of my life purpose.
With reference to this, if students shy away from attaining greater dreams and goals and argue that they are not bright enough, then that is only an excuse. As the president of the university declares, there is no such thing as smartness; it is simply how much people try to get what they need and desire since lethargy and the thought that someone is smart will not take them anywhere (TED, 2013). The four pillars of success, he confirmed, were forming community amongst the students, high expectations, using researchers to create researchers and educational faculty getting concerned with their students’ affairs (TED, 2013). The high expectations create a feeling of curiosity
My goal in life is to make a difference and to more for the better then for the worse, because you never know what life will have in store for you. Life can give and it can take, and you just have to work with it, I learned that at age
It appears that testing is a waste of time, but in reality, it prepares students for future success. Another question that occurs is: What are students gaining from these different tests each year? Many people debate whether the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is considered to be pointless. Maybe these tests are teaching students accountability and responsibility, two vital tools for success in life. Within in the article, “No Child Left Behind: Test-Obsessed Education Won’t Move Us Ahead” the author, David Marshak, slashes the No Child Left Behind Act.
Nick does not allow his life to be overtaken by his dreams and goals like Gatsby and the Buchanan’s do, he is also able to determine when he has gone too far and learns from these mistakes and the mistakes of others which helps to become a better man. Both Gatsby and the Buchanan’s are to consumed in their own lives to be a hero to anyone, they do not care who they hurt in order get to the top and reach their goals. A true hero puts the well being of others in front of themselves and they will try to help a friend at almost any cost to themselves. Nick is not only the narrator of The Great Gatsby but he is also the
It showed growth and change amongst a divided people. Being able to identify with what we accomplished in the past builds hope for the future. We can continue to strive to make our nation better. Debate is good because no one person is right 100% of the time. If we are to continue in process philosophy then we must never be afraid of reconciliation.
The Wrong Self-Fulfilling Prophecy When the tall blonde woman in the essay, “Hunger” by Nilsa Mariano says, “We’re not raising rocket scientists here,” she means she doesn’t believe these children will be smart enough to succeed at such a major goal or career in life. She clearly believes this as she bases it on the children’s Hispanic-American heritage and social class. She is making a self-fulfilling prophecy as she makes her statement, whereas she should be modeling “Culturally responsive and socially responsible practice,” for students, based on the NCTE’s beliefs. In the essay, Nilsa and Jerry visit a school, in which its beliefs are that the students should focus on the arts, rather than truly succeeding in all learning grounds in the academic courses. The tall blonde woman is wrong in stating the school isn’t raising rocket scientists because she makes a dangerous assumption, leads these kids to feel uncomfortable in their learning environment, and deprives the kids from being proud of who they are and wanting to learn.
