Identify and describe the four management function. Management has four main functions. The four main functions of management are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Planning is when a manager identifies and select appropriate organizational goals and courses of actions. There are three major steps evolved in planning. The first step is deciding which goals the organization will peruse, the second is deciding what strategies to adopt to attain those goals. The third step is deciding how to distribute organizational resources to peruse the strategies needed for those goals. Organizing is structuring working relationships so organizational members interact and cooperate to achieve organizational goals. Organizational structure is the outcome of Organizing. Organizational structure is a formal system of task and reporting relationships that coordinates and motivates members so they work together to achieve organizational goals. In controlling the task of the manager is to evaluate how well an organization has achieved its goals and then take any corrective actions needed to maintain or improve performance. Leading is when managers articulate a clear organizational vision for the organization's members to accomplish, and they also energizes and enables employees so everyone understands the part he or she plays in achieving organizational goals. The four building blocks of a competitive advantage are superior efficiency, innovation, quality and responsiveness to customers. Efficiency is how well or how productively resources are used to achieve those goals. Many organization look to reduce the amount of resources they use to produce goods or services. Employee productivity is also a way to improve efficiency. Wal-Mart would be a good example of a company that uses efficiency well. Wal-Mart is always looking for new ways to increase efficiency.
