I understood that companies had to have satisfied workers to produce good results, but I never knew that companies like Zappos focused on this aspect as a framework for their entire company. When I eventually find a job, I would like to be acknowledged by my peers and be a part of a collective unit. In my opinion, workers are likelier to be more motivated when both their extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are met. One of my main takeaways from this topic is that money isn’t the best motivator.
Walmart sells many items at ridiculously low prices. They are able to offer low prices on their items due to an incredible mark-up on imported products. Especially in today's economy, the buck is the big winner. Everyone wants to save money, and they can do that by shopping at Walmart, where many items are the lowest price in town, even if it's only by a few pennies. But consumers aren't helping their fellow countryman earn his own living by buying these imported items.
1. How would you describe the attitudes and emotions of the typical QuikTrip employee? How do these attitudes and emotions influence the employees’ work behaviors? According the company’s growth, being recognized for by Fortune magazine for nine consecutive years as the best companies to work for, the time that the company invests in training and emphasizing the importance of its employees, I would say that this company has employees with positive attitudes, emotions and work ethic. And it seems that with so much time devoted to training and hiring people who like people that the company’s core values can somewhat be instilled within the person rather easily.
The best forms of motivation focus on what the employees deem to be important. Many organizations find that flexibility in job design increases an employee’s longevity with the organization, improves productivity and betters morale ("Reference for Business; Encyclopedia of Business", 2012). Some methods of motivation include empowerment; creativity and innovation; learning; quality of life; monetary incentives; and other incentives ("Reference for Business; Encyclopedia of Business", 2012). Empowerment means giving employees more responsibility and decision making authority so they can feel control over the tasks they are held responsible for and better equips them to carry out those tasks ("Reference for Business; Encyclopedia of Business", 2012). Creativity and Innovation gives employees the opportunity to use their ideas to improve a job, product, or service ("Reference for Business; Encyclopedia of Business", 2012).
Even surgeon who are saving peoples lives every day are making less than a professional athlete would make in a day or in a year. Someone who is a professional athlete is being over paid. If they make more than someone who saves peoples lives than that is just wrong. No one who is playing a sport for just a few months should be getting paid that much money. Even though they are kind of putting their body in danger, that is their choice on what they want to do.
