Since the true path to happiness, according to Epictetus, is the attainment of virtue, we can all become happier by improving ourselves, whether morally or intellectually. Furthermore, Epictetus' philosophy of happiness would lead us to live less stressful lives if we came to worry about only that which we can control. Still, while I admire Epictetus and his philosophy, I do not believe that most of us could be happy purely through the attainment of virtue. I believe that social support and some level of material possessions are necessary for happiness; we cannot forever strive only for virtue. I do, however, believe that Epictetus had a strong point when he asserted that we should only, rationally-speaking, worry about what we can change -- what good is there in worrying about things we cannot
1) Summarize the “Ted” talk or selected video. Shawn Anchor talked about positive psychology and the way we tend to look at success and happiness backwards. Most people follow a success then happiness formula but after success if the goalposts of success keep changing, it’s hard to find happiness. Instead of assuming that future achievement will bring happiness into our lives, we need to change our frame of mind to be happier and more positive. This happier and more positive way of thinking will contribute considerably to the likelihood that we will actually achieve that success.

To Maisel, that would be the smart thing to do, but I don’t agree with his opinion on the matter. I don’t need to stay within my intellectual boundaries. To achieve any of the goals I have for myself, I need to step out of my comfort zone. Sometimes that the only way you can figure out if a type of work is right for you. In Maisel’s own words he says “We are brighter on some days and duller on others.” With this in mind, proving that you can go beyond your native intelligence, is that much easier.
If I was to do personal centred care then this would definitely reduce the risk of abuse purely because I would have a greater understanding and knowledge of the individual’s preferences and know what they like and dislike. Active participation is also very important in my work place, this enables that the service users are keeping fit and mobile but also builds confidence. By promoting active participation this can reduce abuse as the individual engages positively by actively participating is area of their life, such as in personal care, the scope for abuse by others is reduced. Promoting choices and rights is empowerment and about taking control of your life even if this is in a small ways, by including a resident in their care it allows them to still be an individual to have rights and wishes recognised even if they do not verbally contribute to be included is good practise. 4.2 It’s essential to have an accessible complaint procedure as it reduces the chances or abuse occurring, I believe that this is because it’s made easy to report any forms of abuse by anybody and everybody.
We have the ability to improve the quality of life for all the people around us, so we should use it while we can. Because we have the right to freedom of speech, we are able to be the catalysts for a positive change. In fact, we must always be the first to move. Playing safe and putting a picture that too many people are in agreement is not playing smart, it’s depriving one of practicing debating skills and analytical skills. It’s also not a good way to motivate one’s followers to follow their example, either.

Setting long-term goals helps us to better understand what we want out of life and the short-term goals we set help us better reach the long term goals. The reason we break down the long-term goals into short-term goals is because it makes it easier to stay focused on what we want to accomplish.
