Samantha Gearhart Professor Ballard Sociology 120 16 January 2011 September 11, 2001 “Mom, what happened?” I asked my mother, curious as to why she sat in front of the TV crying and calling my father frantically. “Nothing sweetie, go to your room,” my mother responded as tears rolled down her cheeks. September 11, 2001 was a day that changed history forever. Although I was only eleven years old, and had no idea how horrible it truly was, I knew that something terrible had happened. After my mother was able to calm down, and my father returned from work, they sat me down to explain what had happened. Items that were previously allowed onto airplanes such as a box cutter were banned from airports entirely. He said that passengers are no longer able to carry liquids, gels, and/or aerosols in sizes greater than three ounces past security screening. Cockpit doors on many aircrafts were strengthened and bulletproofed to prevent illicit access. Some aircrafts were equipped with CCTV cameras, so it’s possible for the pilots to monitor the cabin activity whenever they please. Pilots also now have an option to carry a gun, but must be trained to use it (Wikipedia.com), and more air marshals have been placed onto flights to improve security (Roger, about.com). Passengers are now unable to carry liquids past security screening checkpoints or onto aircraft, including drinks; all drinks brought onto aircrafts must be purchased in the airport after a passenger has gone past security…show more content…
However, I do know that it’s a pain in the butt, and it’s taken very seriously. I have walked through the security gates and seen at least 20 full bottles of water in the trash, and have had to throw away ninety-dollar perfume because it was larger than three ounces. Personally, I don’t think it ever should have been any other way. It’s heartbreaking to me that something so horrible had to happen in order for us to take such precautions. However, I’m happy that it’s so much safer to fly now. Security is never something that should be taken lightly, especially when you are putting your life in someone else’s hands. September 11, 2001 was a horrible, day. Conversely, good things did come from it. We now have close to zero percent chance of something so horrifying happening again, and that is something many people are very grateful
