Even at the high school level people consider the children who are active in sports to be unintelligent. But in reality this is not the case; in fact, I have had a couple of athlete friends in high school, and they were all ace students. No one considers the fact that high school, as well as college athletes have to manage both their practice and study time. After all the added pressure athletes still manage to get through their work and keep up with those who don’t have any extra work. Most colleges have a minimum grade that the athletes have to be above.
The jocks tend to be those star athletes that walk around school with their cocky attitudes and thinking that their grades do not matter, because they will be going to college on an athletic scholarship anyway. This group is usually concerned with their looks and popularity. The fancy name brand clothes, shoes, and their noses stuck in the air give everyone else the impression that they are rich and too good for anyone else. Geeks and nerds (also known as the cyber clique these days), are anything but popular. Unless you count the fact that most of the popular kids, like to pick on them so often.
When high school students see other people with an item they believe will make them look better, or perform better in a sport, those students automatically want that item. This is why the sight of iPhones, Sperry’s, Power Balance Bracelets, Toms, etc. are commonplace in a high school atmosphere; thus, creating a lack of individuality within society. The majority of people believe that attempting to think, act, and look like others is ideal for a society. However, it can force more people apart in discrepancies.
Living in a state that is not known for being racist, it was difficult seeing this occurring at another high school. I thought it was so great that Morgan Freeman was willing to pay for the costs of prom so that they could integrate all the students for one united prom. He made an excellent point when he said that it was not about changing the students, ironically, the people that teach them had to be changed. These students, mostly due to their parents influence, were surrounded by racism, and in essence, had to choose if they were for or against integration. I was astonished to see that for so many years there were black proms and white proms and that there were two homecoming queens, one black, and one white.
Coming from a High School athlete I don’t think that high school athletes rule U.S. High Schools. I think that they get the same treatment everyone else does or they may even be treated worse. Some teachers hate high school sports so if a student plays a sport in high school that student might have a disadvantage in that class. But it could also go either way if you do get that teacher that likes high school sports the teacher might go a little bit easier on you. Referring back to the Article students from Columbine High School said that high school athletes are given forms of privilege that other students perceive to be unfair and that make some athletes feel that they identify as deviant within the normative structure of the school.
In today’s school society, many stereotypes are being made that pertain to people who play sports; participate in drama productions as well as many other extracurricular activities. The two major stereotypes that everyone has heard about are the “jocks” and “geeks”. One “rules the school” so to speak, while the other is looked down upon and made fun of. Some may like these stereotypes and wish to include themselves in them, but if you sit and analyze every stereotype, you get just an ordinary person with a talent that they choose to display. Stereotyping is simply a way of grouping student’s into they’re comfort zone.
Another one of the major problems caused from not setting dress code for student in high school is computation with in students that ones were each other’s success. Teens in high school of 21st century admit that there’s more computation with others kids not only in sports, educations, but also in dress they wear. Also according to time spend and the experience as being a formal high school student, if the public school set up a dress code it would help both, the students and school faculty. It
There are many positive and negative effects to requiring uniforms and dress codes in school. One negative effect school dress codes and uniforms have on students is the fact students feel they can’t express themselves the way they feel. Many who oppose of dress codes and uniforms say they can’t get up in the morning and wear what they feel like for that day. Students feel if they want to dress down that day and wear sweatpants they should be allowed to. Sara Jane wears dresses almost every day to school.
Sports are traditional held in most high school in the United States. For this reason, participating in sports has become a common in most people’s life at one time in their lives. The problem that is occurring or might occur is if sports become too influential in the society we live in today, and take away from the other benefits of life. The problems that occur due to excessive amount of sports influence including anywhere from the effect upon grades in high school, to the pressure from parents to excel in class as well as be a good athletic in your sport, pressure from peers to do good in sports, and the limited amount of personal time available after a sport. I have had personal experience with the problems that occur when sports are in season.
Of course we had fun and learned a lot of school related topics, but there was one thing I noticed my 8th grade year. We had a lot of “less fortunate” kids. Some of the field trips we would normally take, we couldn’t because they couldn’t afford to go. It was really sad, but then again the students couldn’t actually do something about it. Bullying is such a big subject now because it happens to everyone.
