1). This is when she found her true calling, writing action novels. She took a year off to do some research on action novels, to figure out how to write them, and what she liked most about them (Schawbel. sec. 5).She had some struggles in the beginning, just like most writers do, but her biggest piece of advice to young writers is to never give up, just like she does not.
Prominence of Gothic literature was apparent in the course. Through participation in class, I learnt numerous facts. Various class activities offered valuable insights into gothic literature with emphasis on definition, historical background, and relevance to modern literary discourse. Skills learnt during the semester had positive influence on my writing and critical thinking skills. At the beginning of the semester, I had poor writing skills and critical thinking skills.
I used to read more books that talked about the reality I lived in or science fiction. The way they were written it was amazingly interesting for me, like I would spent days and late nights just to get to the end. The opportunity to read showed me that there were so many ways that I could learn both fun and educational faces of the reading field. When I was in the fifth grade I started to write poems inspired from the readings I did. The school principal and later on my English proffesor followed up with me in my career as a good reader.
We packed and headed out not for a camp ground with tent sites and shower rooms. We headed for the back regions of swamps and raspberry bushes, at least a thousand miles from home and regular communication. We actually had to walk into the pond where we would set up our home-away-from home. What a trek, it was terrible, and when we finally arrived, I was already set to leave. But, no.
Some of the titles of certain books were as followed: A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, Discover the Power Within You by Eric Butterworth, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. These books are suggested reads for the Oprah’s Book Club. Like Lofton states in her writing, “Throughout the well-publicized travails of her book club, Winfrey always recommended nonfiction work on her show and website…” Furthermore Lofton discuss in her journal on how Oprah encourage her viewers to consume or buy what is needed for a change in their
How does James use the prologue to prepare the reader for the events of the novel? In ‘The Turn of the Screw’ prologue, Henry James presents to the reader a scene set for a gothic novel. Though, the novel is a ghost story, we sometimes forget that it is a ghost story and begin to believe what happens in it, he achieves this by using a narrative technique which makes the novel interesting as well as very convincing. He uses the frame narrative structure, the first person point of view and the flash back technique. However, upon further reading, the reader may begin to wonder about the narrator’s reliability.
He becomes extremely anxious in any situation that is other from the norm. He feels offended easily and becomes
Karri Hollingsworth Dana Hatcher ENG-111-WA 5 October 2011 Theme’s found in Literature One reason I love to read is because depending on the choice of book, a feeling and an escape is provided. Different Author’s can trigger an emotion and deepen our understanding of a certain subject. Patricia Cornwell is a murder/mystery writer who provides these aspects for me and shows different themes throughout most of her fiction novels. For me, her writing is “escape literature” providing entertainment all while making me ask myself “what is it that she is trying to say?” I have read Patricia Cornwell’s entire “Kay Scarpetta” series and each of these novels reveals several recurring themes; courage, ambition, happiness. Patricia chose a strong female to be her main character.
The Novel A Thousand Splendid Suns deals with a vast amount of political, ethical, and cultural issues that are still prevalent in today’s society. Also, being a young adult who has listened and watched the news during 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan I thought it would be relevant to read a story that talks about the violence, fear, hope and faith that one endures while being a female citizen in Afghanistan. Aside from the fact that this novel is very intriguing, it is also a very famous book and was the number one book in the nation for over a month (http://khaledhosseini.com). After researching A Thousand Splendid Suns and realizing over 2 million copies have been sold world wide in over 35 languages, I was under the impression it would be a fantastic read (http://khaledhosseini.com). Additionally, due to the popularity of the book it was evident that I would not have a difficult time finding a significant amount of literary criticism on both the author and the novel.
In this story, the reader can recognize the main character right away and emotionally connect with their journey therefore creating a good suspenseful short story. Conflict is what the author uses to create suspense and therefore making it enjoyable for the reader. It is essential to the plot. In the short story “Yellow Wallpaper”, we see a conflict between the narrator and her husband, John. John does not think she is sick: “John does not know how much I really
