I chose to read A Thousand Splendid Suns because it deals with a plethora of issues I find extremely intriguing. After reading a book on women’s rights in my law class, my teacher recommended that I read a thousand splendid suns. I took his recommendation for two reasons; I trust his opinion and I really enjoyed Khaled Hossseini’s bestseller, The Kite Runner. The Novel A Thousand Splendid Suns deals with a vast amount of political, ethical, and cultural issues that are still prevalent in today’s society. Also, being a young adult who has listened and watched the news during 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan I thought it would be relevant to read a story that talks about the violence, fear, hope and faith that one endures while being a female citizen in Afghanistan. Aside from the fact that this novel is very intriguing, it is also a very famous book and was the number one book in the nation for over a month (http://khaledhosseini.com). After researching A Thousand Splendid Suns and realizing over 2 million copies have been sold world wide in over 35 languages, I was under the impression it would be a fantastic read (http://khaledhosseini.com). Additionally, due to the popularity of the book it was evident that I would not have a difficult time finding a significant amount of literary criticism on both the author and the novel. Along with all the reasons above I felt that the issues and themes discussed and portrayed in the novel would be very easy for the average grade 12 english student to comprehend during the remaining parts of my independent study assignment.
