This article tar-gets the general reader of The Atlantic Magazine, and people with special interest in the subject of gender roles. This article was motivated by the fact that women became the dominant part of the workforce in 2010, for the first time in history. The first thing Hanna Rosin does after the little introduction is that she tells the readers a story. She uses a kind of a narrative argumentation, in that she tells a real life story of this “Cowboy Sci-entist”, who invented a way for the parents to decide whether they want a girl or a boy. | Extended Essay | To what extent does the social and cultural background affect the familial relationships in Khaled Hosseini’s ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns? | | Candidate Name: SS | Candidate Number: 00000 - 0001 | Session: May 2005 Centre: Word Count: 3978 | Abstract To what extent does the social and cultural background affect familial relationships in Khaled Hosseini’s ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns?’ Most literary reviewers appear to treat ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ from a social and cultural perspective, focusing on gender roles, affecting every Afghan family’s struggle for freedom that were unique to both pre and post-Taliban periods. However, what captivated me upon my reading was the theme of humanity and how it is central to understanding the predicament of the protagonists - Mariam and Laila. This initial interest, stemming from my own perspective as a young woman incited me to investigate further into the issue of gender victimisation. Furthermore, I wanted to learn the attributes that Hosseini used to construct the bond between the two protagonists.
I’ve always been a person with a growth mindset, I can thank my dad for that, and this book just seemed to be a great fit for the type of reading that I do for fun outside of school ,so I felt it would be the best fit for me. As I began reading this book, I had already learned about the immense power of effort and where the right amount of concentrated and well preformed effort could take anyone. However, I had no idea of this “fixed mindset” which caused people to believe that effort was not as powerful, as I know it to be, but actually bad. I learned so much about the extent that the fixed mindset can take you. It can take someone who as all the talent in the world, such as one of my personal heroes Billy Beane, and force them to fail at their true dream and passion.

What do all these books, essays and poems have in common that makes them so high in quality? Rules for writing have changed over time, but it is still as easy as ever to distinguish good writing over bad writing. The challenge is trying to explain why something is good and analyzing the tools used to produce this “good writing.” Tools such as choosing the right topic or theme to discuss, creating an effective organization throughout their writing, maintaining a narrative that invokes feeling within the reader, and creating a cohesive and fluent writing style. These techniques have remained generally the same over time, but they have been changed and tweaked as society grows. But the tools used to put Jane Austin’s name in literary history still continue to do so even with today’s great writers.

Khaled Hosseini's novel A Thousand Splendid Suns is a heart wrenching novel following two protagonists through their hardships as women in war-torn Afghanistan. Throughout the novel, the theme of loyalty and devotion is shown through Laila’s actions and her relationships with others. The devoted and loyal nature of Laila serves as both a fortunate advantage and a crippling weakness throughout the course of her life. Hosseini's use of loyalty and devotion shows how these can both move Laila forward, and keep her at a standstill. The relationships are between Laila and her father, Tariq, Aziza, and Mariam.
People in the United States may have recognized it as a negative short term impact due to the many strict limitations and sacrifices that had to be made. Even though the wait was long and often times challenging, in the long run it seems to have made a positive impact on women’s fashion as new styles and trends resulted from the cause of the war. 3 INTRODUCTION “If you don’t need it. DON’T BUY IT” – a rather “foreign concept in today’s society” (Sexton), but a well-known one among all Americans during the 1940s as it was seen on every single ration booklet. In the essay my true love is reading the author explains her love for reading and the benefits of it in one’s life. She feels that “apart from studies, reading has laid a path for her self improvement and also helped her in stress relieving”. The author says that “Never underestimate the usefulness of reading. Even when I read to pass time, it is never time waste”(R. Afriye, 2008, p.54). By this she wants to say that reading is the thing we do as a hobby for passing our time, but unknowingly it is very useful and gives us so much knowledge about anything in very less time.
The feeling that I have when writing is a very joyous one because it is my nonverbal communication to express my emotions and thoughts without the critism of the outside world. Writing is truly an art that takes practice and concentration, and once you have accomplished this skill, you will succeed in the process of writing. To begin with, the experience that I have had as a writer were both good and bad. They were good because I was able to earn good grades on my essays in school, I made excellent pen pal friends because of my ability to write and I was able to survive my teenage years with the writings that took place in my diary. Writing was my safe haven and it always cheered me up because of the fact that I could transfer my thoughts from my mind and unto a sheet of paper that would hold memories of a lifetime!
